Here is a small sample of the beauty that awaits visitors in what remains of the Atlantic Rainforest. These are all wild birds who come out of the woods during winter to eat fruit at feeders set up by a birdwatching lodge (@trilhadostucanos). My father and I spent a few hours among them yesterday.

It's hard to choose just five our of thousands of images, but these five will hopefully illustrate the colors, variety, and character of South American avian life. Featured in the pictures: Maroon-bellied Parakeets, Plain Parakeets, Saffron Toucanet, Green-headed Tanager, and Magpie Tanager.

I hope we'll learn the true value of these beings while they are still around. I love the things that humans create, from the poems and paintings to the fancy gadgets and the cameras that allow me to take such pictures. But, at least to me, such things don't hold a candle to this wonderful world we are often so uncurious about. We dream of discovering life on other planets while the life is right here.

Each of these birds is a wonder that no human effort can reproduce. They share the world with us, and yet people in power are willing to lose them for us and for future generations for the sake of more golf courses, private jets, and golden bathtubs. May the growing global popularity of birding inspire support for environmental protection. We need it dearly. by @rogermaioli
