More copies of my novels being sold, and more editing breaks whilst working on the manuscript of the fourth and final novel in The Shepherd’s Overwatch series, Angel of Wrath. It also means that my fingers are often on the bowstring rather than the keyboard to give my brain some rest. As I follow the main characters from my novel out of the military and into what is alleged to be the normality of civilian life, many themes emerge; new beginnings, the cost of change, the ongoing need for courage, seeking peace and healing — and much more. Still another thread that runs through the book can be summed up by a quote from Miyamoto Musashi: “A peaceful man must still know violence, or his peace belongs to whoever threatens it.” — and as I look at the madness going on in the world, I am drawn to think of the truth in that statement.

Bowtech RPM 360 komplett überholt

Der Bowtech RPM 360 (auf den Markt gekommen im Jahr 2014) gehört mit einer werkseitig angegebenen IBO-Geschwindigkeit von 360 fps (Feet per Second / ca. 395 km/h) definitiv zu den schnellsten Serien-Compoundbögen, die jemals gebaut wurden.
Auch wenn die Bogenindustrie im Bereich der sogenannten „Speed Bows“ (Geschwindigkeitsbögen) extrem umkämpft ist, behauptet sich der RPM 360 bis heute in der absoluten Spitzenklasse
Selbst moderne High-End-Flaggschiffe wie der PSE Sicario bewegen sich mit rund 357 fps in einem sehr ähnlichen Geschwindigkeitsfenster. Das zeigt, dass der RPM 360 auch nach über einem Jahrzehnt technisch kaum überholt wurde, da die physikalischen Grenzen des Materials bei Compoundbögen weitgehend ausgereizt sind.

Die Besonderheiten des RPM 360Für seine enorme Geschwindigkeit bot der Bogen für damalige Verhältnisse einzigartige Eigenschaften:
Überraschend weicher Auszug: Typische Speed-Bögen haben oft einen sehr aggressiven, unangenehmen Auszugszyklus („Draw Cycle“). Bowtech gelang es durch das OverDrive Binary Cam System, die Kraftentfaltung vergleichsweise harmonisch zu gestalten.
Der RPM 360 war und ist eine absolute „Rennmaschine“. Er ist aufgrund seiner enormen Energie und des knackigen Abschusses allerdings kein typischer Anfängerbogen, sondern richtet sich eher an erfahrene Schützen und Bogenjäger.

A picture of me in my natural habitat (my study), and another of my published works(in order: Echoes in the Wind, A Wind of Bitter Tears, and The Devil in the Downdraft). I continue to edit Angel of Wrath, the fourth and final novel in The Shepherd’s Overwatch series. In the meantime, if you haven’t read the others, I have signed copies available to sell direct to my followers. These are novels are military fiction based on my own experiences, that follow the main characters in their life in the Army, and out the other side into civilian life. The transition out of the forces is especially tricky, and that is the ground-note of the fourth book in the series. My books are also available directly from my publisher, @chiselbury, and from the usual online suspects.

In the background of the photo of me, you can also spot another aspect of my life, which is scale model making. I find it a (mostly) restful, mindful activity, that enables me to focus my attention carefully on just the thing in front of me, rather than stewing over all sorts of things I cannot control. It is another part of my life that enables me to concentrate on my writing. So the newer followers bestowed upon by the algorithm can get to know another part of the puzzling person that is me!

Since the algorithm has allowed me a few more followers, I thought I should make an “about me” post. One thing that is quickly evident about me, is that I love archery. Another thing that is obvious too, is what a German archer friend described as “my resting assassin face” — for the record, I do smile, but I do often look like I’m deep in thought, or else premeditating something 😂 . However, my main reason for being on Instagram is because I’m an author. Up to this point, I have been writing a series called The Shepherd’s Overwatch, four novels based around my military service (Echoes in the Wind, A Wind of Bitter Tears, The Devil in the Downdraft, and Angel of Wrath). However, with the fourth and final book in the series now in the editing stage, I am thinking about further writing adventures; stay tuned for more developments on that front. Former Australian Army padre Roger Marsh reflects on the powerful sense of family created by military service, and how difficult the transition can be when someone leaves that family behind.

It is one of the many revealing moments from what was possibly the most candid author interview I have ever conducted. Roger speaks from the heart about military life, trauma, moral injury and the experiences that led him to write his Rob Llewellyn novels (The Shepherd's Overwatch series).

Possibly the most revealing author interview I have ever conducted.

Roger Marsh is a former Australian Army padre who served in Afghanistan and East Timor. In this remarkably candid conversation, he speaks from the heart about his experiences, some of the difficult times he has overcome, and what ultimately drove him to write.

At times, the interview is almost harrowing. Roger talks about trauma, moral injury, institutional betrayal and the often unseen consequences of military service. He also explains how these experiences shaped Echoes in the Wind, A Wind of Bitter Tears and The Devil in Downdraft, his novels about former Royal Marine sniper turned Australian Army padre Rob Llewellyn.

The full interview is quite long, but it is definitely worth making time for.

Today is a great day, as I have completed the first draft of the final novel in the Shepherd’s Overwatch series, which will be entitled Angel of Wrath. It follows the journey of my main characters as they move on with life after leaving the army. There’s still a fair bit of work to be done to get it ready for publication, but the story is now down and I happy with the way it works. The feeling I have this morning is very similar to that which I had after finishing the first draft of the second novel, though the sheer weight off my shoulders at finishing this book is not quite as great as when I completed the first draft of A Wind of Bitter Tears. Thank you to everyone who has supported me through this journey so far; it has been one of the best things I have ever done for my own mental health, and has helped me capture the essence of my own experience, even though I have chosen to write fiction. Copies of the first three novels are available on the usual online retailers and directly from me for my followers. Please consider buying them, especially if you are interested in military fiction that departs from the Jack Reacher mould, and instead wanders through a more reflective mode.

Today is glioblastoma awareness day. It is over six years since our dear son Jonathan died of this illness. It pays no respect for age or vigour; Jonny was a great athlete, and progressed quickly in his skill in martial arts. Please consider giving to reputable charities in your country that support research into this form of brain cancer, or those that support those who suffer from the disease, and the families who journey with them. The journey is hard, and will say no more of it now, other than to say that in the fullness of time, I will be writing a book that wrestles through these themes. Hail the victorious dead.

Mackerel sky and moonlight — beauty that gladdened my soul. I don’t just write, but I live to outrage the algorithm and commit random acts of humanity in sea of unreality. The first three books in the Shepherd’s Overwatch series, along with work on the fourth and final book, Angel of Wrath, being carried out in the background. My books are intended to be both a window in the madness of military life, and an opportunity for me to distill the essence of my own experience. The final book will be a look into what life is like as people try to transition out of the army, and into what calls itself normality. If you haven’t yet read my books, please give them a go. They are not a Rambo or Reacher style books. Rather, the action is woven into the relationships that undergird the lives of the characters. There is action and adventure, but the real story is the people.
