A HUGE thank you to every artist, volunteer, supporter, and everyone who played a part in making the first-ever 70 on 70 Mural Festival happen! 🎨🙌🏾

@jasontetlak @goodlookin.signs @allisonbamcat @brittpaintsalot @taylordpaints @lenaugrenart @toonky_berry @qwynto @michele.noiset @rightmind.studio @candiceteeterduniganart @mycoffeyshop @nicocathcart

What started as an idea became something real—artists coming together, walls being transformed, and the community showing up to experience it all.

Every mural left a piece of creativity behind that West Memphis can continue to enjoy long after the festival. ❤️

To everyone who painted, helped, supported, shared, pulled up, or simply believed in the vision—THANK YOU!

This was the first 70 on 70 Mural Festival, but definitely not the last. 🎨🔥

Final mural by @rogue.murals

Kirsten absolutely knocked this Studebaker mural out of the park. We are grateful for the South Bend history she put into this piece.

This little boy shines bright right across the street from the Studebaker Plaza and will be cherished for many years to come ❤️

📣 5th Artist Announcement 📣

Meet @rogue.murals ✨

Kirsten Sandlin is one of our great friends, an amazing muralist, and festival organizer!

Last year, she made the drive all the way from Memphis just to help take care of our artists and support the festival. Her kindness, generosity, and willingness to jump in meant the world to us.

This year, we’re so excited to welcome her back- to paint! 🎨

We’re honored to host her and excited to share what she has in store for us!
.

.
Kirsten Sandlin is a seasoned muralist who creates large-scale public art rooted in community, history, and connection. Having spent many decades painting, her interpretive murals frequently feature children to explore universal themes of hope, innocence, and understanding. Navigating her practice with aphantasia, Kirsten strives to create pieces that spark dialogue and belong to the community. She is the recent winner of the 2026 Dogwood Arts mural competition.

To many people, @peggy_oki is remembered as the only woman in the legendary Z-Boys, but she is also an artist, conservationist, & pioneer who helped transform skateboarding forever.

Growing up in Southern California, Peggy was a surfer before she was a skateboarder. When she couldn’t surf, she took to the streets, using a skateboard to mimic surfing’s fluid carving movements. That influence became her signature style: low, aggressive turns, speed, & graceful lines. As the only female member of the Zephyr Competition Team, Peggy skated in the 1970s, when few female skaters received recognition. Whether she realized it or not, Peggy showed generations of girls that they belonged on a skateboard.

As I painted Peggy for Women's History Month, I found myself reflecting on how much skateboarding has changed. Growing up in the South, I loved the culture, creativity, & freedom skateboarding represented—but I never skated myself. Whether someone told me girls didn’t belong or I simply absorbed that message from the world around me, it never felt like a place for people like me.

Now, working with @dunwoodyparksandrec painting pioneers who changed that culture, I’ve seen firsthand how skateboarding has evolved. I recently had the honor of meeting Ariel Ries, owner of @fargoskateboarding , who built far more than a skatepark—she created a community where everyone feels welcome. Because Peggy opened the door, and women like Ariel continue to hold it open, my youngest daughter now grabs her board to skate knowing she is welcome.

Representation doesn't just change who gets noticed; it changes who believes they belong.

But Peggy’s legacy goes beyond skateboarding. Like many innovators, she didn’t stop creating when competition ended—she found new ways to use her creativity. Through her artwork and the Origami Whales Project, Peggy inspires conservation & helps protect marine life.

Whether carving lines on a skateboard or creating art for conservation, Peggy has used every chapter of her life—athlete, artist, & conservationist—to open doors & leave the world more welcoming, beautiful, & connected than she found it.

And that's a legacy worth painting.

“Neighborhood Watch” celebrates the small wonders that make the Wolf River area special—native plants, insects, stones, and flowers collected as treasured neighborhood discoveries.

Some pieces carry personal meaning: mimosa blossoms for @fernsperation, Lake Superior agates for @rickpren, ginkgo leaves for my children, and cardinal flowers honoring loved ones we’ve lost. Others were brought to life by the community itself: Pecker the eastern bluebird (named by 5-year-old Will), Alicja (@uleeshuh) the trapdoor spider, and Moob the praying mantis.

The mural is filled with local wildlife and native plants, all gathered around a simple reminder: Enjoy the small things.

This project for Germantown Greenway was such a gift. Painting in the woods alongside nine incredible artists, watching a dark tunnel transform day by day, and meeting the people who use the trail made the experience unforgettable. I learned the names of countless dogs, chatted with bikers and walkers, had meaningful conversations about life, health, education, and disabilities that maybe are superpowers, and was reminded once again that my favorite part of public art isn’t the painting—it’s the people.

Thank you to @cat.pena for bringing this project to life, to @germantowntenn for the opportunity, and to everyone who stopped by to say hello along the way. ❤️.

I am ashamed to admit I almost forgot to thank amazing assistant @emmaawilkes! I am so sorry, Emma! As usual, I wouldn’t have finished on time without you!

Oh…Don’t forget to check out the other amazing artists that killed this tunnel (going down the left and up the right from the entrance): @kierstennwilliams, @jadenlspencer, @cforresterart, @samanthawoodart, me, @angiart1, @ahousecalled_adele, @qwynto, @lazerchef, @savethebirdsart. Every urce has an amazing story and is worth seeing! taken in Germantown, Tennessee by @rogue.murals

When I was invited to this one-day mural festival/competition, my first thought was honestly that I probably shouldn’t do it. I’m one of the slowest painters I know, and I told my partner I was afraid I would blow it. He just said, “So what if you do? You should still try.”

So, I said yes and started designing "It’s Okay to Blow It" — a twist on the subject matter, but also a reminder to myself.

When the full lineup was announced, I almost backed out again. I saw artists with more experience, speed, and skill than me — including a friend I have always looked up to. When I told him I was nervous about this, he said: “Nah, it's an evolution. Take the next step. You got it.”

So I went.

And honestly, I did blow it in a few ways. I didn’t finish on time, and was still painting (in the dark) while others were wrapped up. It was far from my finest or neatest piece. But every co-artist, every Dogwood Arts staff and volunteer was so supportive and kind.

And somehow, by the end of the weekend, I was one of the two artists with @mywildmurals who were chosen by the public vote.

There’s really no reason I should have been. Every artist there created an amazing piece deserving of the win, and I learned something from each and every one of them.

But the real lesson I learned is that sometimes the thing you’re afraid of doing is exactly the thing you need to try.

So thank you to everyone who stopped by, talked, voted, or supported the festival and the art and music scene in Knoxville. And to the other artists who made it what it was — Bryan, Curtis, Gared, Ivann, Joseph, Megan, Paris, Robert, and Whitney — It was an honor to paint with you! As far as I am concerned, working with you guys and now calling you friends was the real prize.

Thank you for the amazing weekend @dogwoodarts and all your amazing volunteers!

And also all that sponsored the festival, fed us, housed us (@crowneknox), and gave us amazing swag bags of love (@sugarlandsshine). Thank you!
