Hand planing can get tiring FAST...

Using my Lie Nielsen No.7 to true up some legs on my latest dining room table project. An ideal height to hand plane lumber is much lower than what you see here. Ideally, you want to plane wood at a height at which you can use your upper body weight to bear down to better keep the plane in contact with the wood. When its too high, you wind up stressing your arms and joints to push down on the plane harder than you need to in turn tiring yourself out or straining yourself.

This workbench is more for assembly than hand tool woodworking. Ill get around to building a 2nd proper height bench eventually but for now, there are shavings to be made.

New YouTube video is up!

This 36" round coffee table was one of the heaviest I've made yet! Made of solid 2" thick white oak I had ordered from @first_cut_custom_woodworks

This project was made much easier with the help of @jimmydiresta and his @shopbottools CNC to cut out the perfect circle. The base, I was able to perfectly slip joint together with zero gaps. Very proud of myself on that one. A nerve racking fit up for sure but a more than perfect one in the end.

I finished this white oak kitchen island back in April of 2023 and it was the largest project that I had ever had to build out of my tiny tool packed garage so I wasn't able to film a whole lot or step back far enough for progress photos.

The new shop at my new house will be strictly for woodworking so, fingers crossed, we'll have a lot more room for projects like this very soon 🤞🏼

Being 8 ft long and only having the front half of the island to make it rigid enough was a challenge for me to build. The back half of the island is left open for bar stool seating. I was able to figure out how to make it as strong as possible without sagging in the middle, which would have been catastrophic to a piece, especially with so many drawers.

I learned a lot on this one and I'm looking forward to building more large projects like it.

P.S. The last photo is the fitment of the trim to the rounded/tapered leg and I'm still so very proud of that 😂

Built this little cabinet for myself out of Aspen and figured Monkeypod. I set out to make it solely a sharpening cabinet with the fold down work surface/door but it got larger and I'm sure I'll be storing some other goodies inside.

Lesson learned... Aspen is not fun to work with. Its such a white, bright, and soft feeling wood with some flaming figure but man oh man does it not like to be tooled in any way shape or form. Every cut is fuzzy whether its with a saw blade, router bit, or hand tools....and yes, everything is sharp!

I'll give it another shot since I have some more of it left over but I won't be happy about it! 😂

Woodshop is coming along nicely, projects are rolling in, and I will share a more complete post about how its going here soon enough! taken in East Durham, New York by @rojascarpentry

We had a plethora of projects and "problems" to solve this weekend. I chose to tackle the new pizza peel for Chad's new minion shaped pizza oven named Bub.

We made it 100% of aluminum. Cut, stamped, ground, and welded from what we could find around Chad's shop. It is fun to use your brain to solve problems you don't normally face everyday.

The master bedroom in my house doesn't have much wall space after the queen bed went in so I had to make a tall but skinny (30") dresser. It JUST fits between the door casing on the closet and hallway door.

Using my @kregjig Foreman pocket hole machine I was able to VERY quickly put a dresser together for myself. Drawers and body were all put together with Kreg screws on this one. I needed it fast and fast this was!

USE YOUR PRETTY TOOLS...
So many great companies do this community a great service of making high quality and GORGEOUS tools. We also have extremely talented (and cool, I may add) people like @jbowerengraving . She is one of my favorite people in the world and from the moment I saw her work years before I met her, I knew I had to have one of her engravings on something. What better than a Bronze @lienielsentoolworks No.4 hand plane fitted with Cocobolo rosewood handles! An absolute gem and a pleasure to use.

Sidenote: FINALLY getting some work done in the new shop. Shop still has some work to go but what shop doesn't?

In January, we set sail for Nashville to take another continuous arm windsor chair class with the amazing Greg Pennington, one of my favorite people I may add. On the way down, Verizon had that huge outage and I needed to use a paper map like the good ol'days to drive the remaining 8hrs.

I stopped in at the OfAllTrades residence for a few days first to get some farm chores done with Anne, Adam, and baby Alexander.

Then off to the races of riving, skewing+slicing, bending, shaving, and scraping all week at Greg's. Just a few days later and one VERY late night on Broadway.... we all had a chair to take home!

@_callmemabie_ and I have talked about this a million times but how cool is it that you and your Maker friends can just casually meet anywhere in the country to just hang out an have a blast?

I was FINALLY able to try out this idea I've had for years! I took my #Diresta Ice pick and inlaid brazilian rosewood scales into it. I used the @aeonlaser.us fiber laser to make the recesses on the sides of the pick body to accept the rosewood veneer. With some careful trimming, CA glue, and a little free time I was able to get it done. Looking forward to playing with this idea a little more and creating some files to do it easier.
