CORAZÓN

The Spanish word corazón, meaning “heart,” originates from the Latin word cor (cordis), which also meant “heart.” Over centuries, the word evolved through Vulgar Latin and Old Spanish forms before becoming the modern corazón. Its Latin root can still be found in many languages and words related to the heart, emotion, and courage, such as cardiac, cordial, and courage. Beyond its literal meaning, corazón is deeply connected to ideas of love, affection, and human connection, making it one of the most meaningful and widely used words in the Spanish language.

ENSŌ

Ensō is the echo of a moment fully lived. It is drawn when the self steps aside, allowing emptiness to move the hand. The circle holds both form and formlessness, a fleeting trace of clarity that fades even as it appears, leaving behind the quiet truth of now.

“All these forests or branches were born here, they belong to this land and that is exactly why I use them. It is a branch, for example, that has long since ceased to live. It has already dried up or died, but its bend has survived. Its bend has a cause just like the life of a human being. It is not linear, it branches out, it crosses my path, a shoot comes forth, it seeks the sun, it seeks other things. I converse with each branch and admire it. That’s the way I relate to the material of my work. It’s a very deep relationship. My feeling is like this plant matter that holds the power of life and its beauty. Once I create something, because of that, it doesn’t belong to me anymore.”

CHESTERFIELD

It may surprise you to know that Chesterfield sofas are thought to date as far back as the mid-1700s, when Lord Philip Stanhope commissioned a piece of furniture which evolved to be the much-admired Chesterfield sofa we know today.

He wanted a striking leather sofa with a low seat and high back to allow his gentlemen to sit comfortably without creasing their suits, thus, the iconic Chesterfield design was created.

Lord Philip Stanhope was the fourth Earl of Chesterfield, which explains where the name ‘Chesterfield sofa’ comes from. It’s thought that on his deathbed, Lord Stanhope told his butler to ‘give Mr. Dayrolles a chair’, intending his butler to pull up a seat for his godson, Mr. Dayrolles. However, his butler interpreted this to mean that the Chesterfield chair should be passed onto him and arranged for it to be transported to his home.

It wasn’t long before other wealthy members of the upper-class society had their own Chesterfield sofas and chairs commissioned for their homes, cementing the style as a sign of wealth and class.

Perhaps one of Freud’s lesser-known theories was that people talk more openly and freely when they’re comfortable, which is why he opted for an iconic Chesterfield sofa when treating his patients.

This allowed them to lie back and talk openly about what was troubling them, which was a crucial element of his treatment process.

The fact that he chose a Chesterfield for this task speaks volumes about the comfort and luxurious feel of these beautiful pieces of furniture.

Despite travelling all over the world, Freud always had a sofa on-hand to help him practice and the leather Chesterfield soon became synonymous with the practice of psychoanalysis.

PINK MYSTERY

The color pink was recognized as a concept in 800 B.C. in Homer’s Odyssey. The term was coined in the 17th century by a Greek botanist for the ruffled edges of carnations.

The history behind salt extraction from pink lakes of Las Coloradas goes the way back to the Mayan era. The indigenous people of the region started extracting salt almost two thousand years ago, back when the place was known as “Emal” by the Mayans.

Las Coloradas, which means ‘blush red’ in Spanish, get its unique tint from red-coloured algae, plankton and brine shrimp that use the salty water as their habitat, creating the magenta pink hue.

The pink flamingos feed on these organisms, which in turn gives them their pink color as well.

BUTTERFLY CHAIR

Originally called the BKF or Hardoy chair after the trio of Le Corbusier alums—Grupo Austral’s Antonio Bonet, Juan Kurchan and Jorge Ferrari Hardoy—who created it in Buenos Aires in 1938.

One of their first projects together was a redesign of a classic folding wood-and-canvas military chair known as the "Tripolina" (first introduced in 1877 for the British Army). Patented by Joseph Beverly Fenby, a British engineer the chair subsequently became a battlefield favourite because it was wooden and, crucially, it folded.

The group reimagined the Tripolona with modern-day materials, constructing a folding frame of tubular steel, which was just becoming trendy in furniture use among modernist designers (Marcel Breuer's iconic Cesca chair was introduced in 1928).

In a nod to the human-centric, ergonomically-minded attitudes of modernist design, they created a seat that is at once supportive and comfortable, contorting perfectly to the human frame. The seat is also both collapsible and stackable, making it a flexible and practical accessory.

FLOAT GLASS

Glass windows history traces far back to the prehistoric times when glass was first discovered in nature. However, this glass isn’t the clear, transparent type of glass that we’re used to. The prehistoric people used naturally-occurring volcanic glass such as obsidian to fashion weapons like knives and arrowheads, as well as jewelry and money.

According to archaeological evidence, the first man-made glass surfaced at 3500 BC in the regions of Eastern Mesopotamia and Egypt. Understandably, manufacturing glass used to be a slow and difficult process due to small glass melting furnaces and its insufficient heat. But this changed when Syrian craftsmen introduced the blowpipe.

The art of glass production made its way to Rome and its colonies. And by the end of the 1st century AD, manufacturing glass was refined and done at scale – to a point that glass became a commonly-available material in the Roman world. This early type of window glass was of uneven thickness and was not see-through like modern glass but it allowed some light to pass through.

In the year 1903, a French chemist named Edouard Benedictus made the accidental discovery of laminated glass when his glass flask that was coated with plastic cellulose nitrate dropped to the floor and shattered – but did not break. Since this discovery, the process of inserting a thin plastic film between two sheets of glass allowed for more safety with larger windows.

In 1959, Alastair Pilkington introduced the process of making float glass. This remains to be the industry standard of making glass today. In this process, the molten glass is poured onto a bed of molten tin. As the molten glass floats on the molten tin, the molten glass spreads out to form a level surface. This process allows for very large panes of distortion-free glass to be made.

GRACE

Fabienne:
Whose motorcycle is this?
Butch:
It's a chopper, baby.
Fabienne:
Whose chopper is this?
Butch:
It's Zed's.
Fabienne:
Who's Zed?
Butch:
Zed's dead, baby. Zed's dead.

In Pulp Fiction, Zed is a security guard and supposedly Maynard's brother. He has a chopper he calls Grace. Butch Coolidge was being chased by crime boss, Marsellus Wallace into a pawn shop where Butch nearly killed him. Suddenly the pawn shop owner Maynard appeared and held Butch at gun point with his shotgun, knocking out Butch while Marsellus slipped into an unconscious state after his fight with Butch. Maynard then phoned in Zed. Later Maynard woke them both up and they found themselves bound and gagged. Zed then arrived and they woke up 'The Gimp.'

$BEAUTIFUL ILLUSION Due to the low angle of the Sun relative to the observer at sunset, light passes through more of Earth’s atmosphere than when it is overhead. The Sun’s light is subject to both refractive and scattering effects. Refraction can make the bottom part of the Sun, which is near or even below the horizon, appear higher than it actually is. This can give the Sun a distorted appearance that resembles an oval more than a sphere. Near the horizon, scattering of shorter wavelengths of light occurs as it passes through the atmosphere. This is why the blue and green components of light from the Sun drop off significantly for an observer at sunrise or sunset. Yellow, orange, and red wavelengths are longer and less affected by atmospheric molecules, which is whymore light in those wavelengths reaches us, making us perceive sunsets as having golden or reddish colors. When conditions are right it is possible to observe a flash of green light at the end of the sunset. This is due to refraction. Usually a green fringe can be observed at the top edge of the Sun; however, a green flash is rarer to observe. The green flash appears just above the rim of the Sun for one or two seconds. 🌞 📸: #hasselblad500cm 🎞️: #kodakektar100 #hasselblad500cm #filmphotography #kodakfilm #kodakprofessional #kodakprofessional_europe #shootonfilm #peraphotogallery #mediumformatfilm #mediumformat #hasselblad #oceanloversco #oceanview #oceanvibes #afilmcosmos #portrait #houseofspoils #boxofgrain #colorfilm #filmfeed #moments #sunset #costarica by @rokosnaps$

THE TERCENA OF HARMONY (27.01. - 08.02.23)

"A sign of harmony, balance, and equilibrium, Muluc, or Toj in K’iche’ Maya, embodies not only the power, freedom, and inner peace that these states of grace carry, but also all of the struggles and challenges we go through to achieve and maintain them in our lives.

On Muluc days, the Maya give thanks for everything that has come into their lives, regardless of its moral value. On this day, we should acknowledge our karmic debt with humility and sincerity, and assert our intention to reconcile that debt by achieving balance and harmony in our lives.

Remember that whoever has wronged you, has in fact built negative karma against themselves, typically in direct proportion and intensity to the act in question; therefore it is not necessary for you to expend effort in trying to balance the charges.”

CHAPTER 12

“Colors blind the eye.
Sounds deafen the ear.
Flavors numb the taste.
Thought weaken the mind.
Desires wither the heart.
The Master observes the world but trusts the inner vision.
He allows things to come and go.
His heart is open as the sky.”

SETTLER

“The sun appears to pour itself down, and indeed its light pours in all direction, but the stream does not run out. This pouring is linear extension: that is why its beams are called rays, because they radiate in extended lines.

You can see what a ray is if you observe the sun's light entering a dark room through a narrow opening. It extends in a straight line and impacts, so to speak, on any solid body in its path which blocks passage through the air on the other side: it settles there and does not slip off or fall.”

THE LAWS OF SPIRIT

“We are both burdened and blessed by the great responsibility of free will - the power of choice. Our future is determined, in large part, by the choices we make now. We cannot always control our circumstances but we can and do choose our response to whatever arises. Reclaiming the power of choice we find the courage to live fully in the world.” Dan Millman
