Patricia Baik — 𝓑𝓮𝓬𝓸𝓶𝓲𝓷𝓰 CDA is pleased to present 𝓑𝓮𝓬𝓸𝓶𝓲𝓷𝓰, Patricia Baik’s first solo exhibition in Seoul. Based in Sãn Paulo, Korean-Brazilian artist @roledebaik explores memory, time, relationships, and belonging through painting and installation. The exhibition presents new works created during Baik‘s stay in Seoul. 𝓑𝓮𝓬𝓸𝓶𝓲𝓷𝓰 at @cdagallery.kr , Seoul Sept 18th to Oct 17th Meeting Director Moon by chance, this exhibition was a result from a residency of two months at @playtheseoul_ . Having an everyday life for 4 months at the other side of the portal made me feel really lucky by all that happened and all the encounters I had here 🐚 ____ Patricia Baik’s first solo exhibition in Korea, Becoming, presents new works created during the artist’s stay in Seoul. Figures painted on translucent silk curl up, stretch, fold, and unfold, moving from one state to another. Through their bodies and the open space around them, Baik explores how we understand a self that continues to change. The title comes from the concept of “becoming,” which Baik encountered in the writing of Rosi Braidotti. For the artist, becoming is not about reaching a fixed form of being. It means remaining within change—neither this nor that—and finding one’s own measure of what one might become. Raised in Brazil as a Korean-Brazilian artist, Baik has known Korea through family memories while also encountering it as an unfamiliar place to be understood firsthand. This diasporic experience is connected to the artist’s exploration of “inhabiting in-between spaces.” Beyond cultural background, the phrase describes how Baik perceives and expresses the self: not as belonging to a single category, but as continually changing between cultures, times, and identities. Seoul made this experience more immediate. It was the longest period Baik had spent in their mother’s homeland, where familiarity and unfamiliarity existed side by side. Materials and images that had seemed distant in São Paulo were suddenly close at hand, encouraging the artist to experiment with new scenes and scales. In Between Installation for @dmzforest Thank you DMZ숲 and also @seletivoart and @eleagang for making this happen! 감사합니다 🩵⭐️ Following a month-long residency at @acentricspace in Shanghai, China, Baik participates in the DMZ Soop Residency and Exhibition from June 19–25, marking their first artistic engagement with the DMZ. A place between South and North Korea, a space of division and connection. The artist’s reflections, shaped by a life lived across cultural and identity-based boundaries as a Korean-Brazilian, encounter the histories and conditions of the site. The residency serves as an opportunity to share layered perspectives on borders, memory, and belonging. During the DMZ residency, they present In Between, a large-scale, three-part installation of cut-silk butterflies, each piece capturing a fleeting moment in the butterfly’s movement. Between the moments of a wing opening and closing, Baik explores images of transformation and suspension through their auto-fictional narrative practice. Seeing themself as someone who continually inhabits spaces in-between, the artist builds relationships with different versions of self that have emerged across time and identity. Throughout the work, hair appears as a recurring motif, functioning both as a thread of connection and as a trace that records the passage of time and shifts in identity. This connection to the self anchors the body’s experience of the in-between—a condition of never fully belonging to one place or another, of existing along boundaries rather than within fixed categories. Within this vast and ambiguous space, the body continually renegotiates its position. Baik sees the DMZ Soop as another such in-between place. Existing along the border of division while holding the possibility of coexistence between humans and nature, the site foregrounds connection as a vital force linking people to one another and to the natural world.
