In the realm of negative tricks, grabbed neg makio is the hardest…

Having all you weight on one foot, makes it hard to cling to a curb or rail if you have thin negative plates. And then you try to grab the opposite foot, and you realise you have to twist your body in a way that makes you loose the negative.

Neg mak being already pretty rare, grabbed neg mak is probably the rarest neg trick (except maybe for neg souls).

Strangely, old 90s video have their fair share of grabbed neg makios, which is pretty impressive since they were done on the non existing neg plates of Majestic 12 or Argon boots.

Skaters who are often seen doing neg makios like @chadhornish or @airingates , rarely grab it because it’s f…. hard to balance on a long grind. @thefarmacy_ do grab most of his recent neg makios, even in AO 🤯 (see his latest promo video Ecto-Roller ). Another pretty good neg makio grabber is acostablades

In my opinion, this cessslide from Neou Men is the greatest hammer of all times...

In term of hammers, names like Feinberg, @carlospianowski, Campbell, @brianshima, @chrishaffey, @julien_cudot come to everybody's mind and for good reasons.

But look at this freaking #ufocessslide !
- First, frontside ufo are way harder to control than royales, if you miss you are very likely to loose your trajectory and fall from the curb.
- Then, there are those two metal rings, cast in concrete that you have to avoid to keep your legs. If you fall and manage to slide the curb on your ass you'll hit them.
- And then, the surface if very rough concrete that can put you off balance at anytime by blocking your wheels.

I guess at 45° degree angle it slides pretty well though ...

Also what speed do you have at the end of the trick ??

Did he cellslide for the shot and roll the end ? Did he crash on landing ?

Its really a shame that this what not shot in video, if anybody witnessed the trick, I'll be SO interested to hear about the story.

God I love this era of @jonjulio skating 🔥
Sure topsides can be spotted here and there in previous videos. But JJ mastery really cemented topsides as part of the official tricks vocabulary. In Hoax3, his section definitely felt modern and new school compared to the rest of the video. His part in VG4 had exactly the same impact.

The fact that he mastered the hardest of topsides, the #rocketfishbrain, made him an absolute superstar to look up to.
To this day, not sure anyone matched his style on this trick.

Backslide grab on a kink rail 😮 ...

Look at the control on that #backslide, perfectly grabbed all the way down this kink rail.

And with #argonskates, which I've never skated personally but they don't look super backslide friendly.

Skater is tagged as "Webby", young TG Webber maybe ? This is from the 1996 #mydailyroutine video.

Interesting rare fishbrain variations ...

In the days were fishbrains had to be perfectly topside or called darksides or lava, some skaters still found ways to make the trick even harder.

Taïg Khris Sacre Coeur Jump looks mental from this angle ...

In case you wondered, he his riding flat on this one ;-) With strange aggro/free skates I could not identify. Maybe a special version of the RB Solo ?

I had never took interest in this stunt before, and the most common photo shot from behind doesn't do it justice.

This kind of stunt is aimed at mainstream audience, not at hardcore skaters. This is not the kind of skating we enjoy but still ... even with the security net it's a super wild jump 😲

Before blading Taïg Khris was a quad master …

As a kid of the 80s, I rollerskated for 10 years before blading. My first exposure to acrobatic skating was from a bootleg VHS copied from a friend of a friend of a friend.

It featured @taigkhris in quad skates landing 720 spins in #sidestance (or #eaglestance) ?). As of today, with #rollerskating comeback, I’ve yet to witness the same level of control from the new generation. It will come and be surpassed I’m sure.

When blading appeared it was not obvious that it would be successful and outperform quads for acrobatics. Really good roller skaters never managed to
transition to blading. @taigkhris however, totally embraced it and became one of the best vert skater ever. You may remember him for his silly TV and publicity stunts, but rewatch his vert competition runs. He was a master at his craft.

The introduction of #roughgrind.
I've always been a huge fan of this pretty unknown duo section between @rspyzer and @lgzinfinity in 1998 #nightofthestring video.

For me it cemented the idea of rough grinds. At a time where we were all trying to learn the basics, Louie and Randy were already pushing the difficulty for themselves.

I think Randy skates the #rollerbladedirk which were pretty good for heel support.
Not sure what Louie is skating.

Who remembers this goofy 2005 Korean rollerblading movie ?
Name is “The Agressives” or 태풍태양 / Taepungtaeyang, in original version.

I remember liking it back then. Tricks vocabulary and idiosyncrasies of blading way of life were pretty spot on.

Still some silly situations due to a lack of knowledge about our scene . E.g. the novice rider trying directly to land a true topsoul before learning anything else.

From what I remember of the plot, the difficulty of adjusting to adult work life from a rollerblading youth was also a topic covered by the story arc of the badass blader of the movie.

All in all, I have fond memories of the movie, definitely higher quality than typical sport/underground tribes movies. This is definitely due in part thanks to Korean cinema being smart and high quality in general.

Brian Shima was not the first ..

2002 IMYTA in Montreal
@brianshima wallrides the stadium. A very famous trick in rollerblading history.

Less known fact, this trick was introduced one year earlier by the french rider Neou Men. It's showcased in the 2001 @kizerframes Outsiders video. Granted he did not actually landed it properly. But the balls were there.

No controversy here, Shima totally acknowledged the inspiration at the time.

Don't hesitate to tag Neou if he has an IG account so he knows he's not forgotten.

Last trivia, the parkour athlete @matt_mccreary1 matched the wallride by foot. You can check it on his youtube account.

In the 90s, backslides were super slow, grabbed and controlled.

Somehow we lost that ability probably due to wax, skating faster, and harder plastic boots.

Less trick vocabulary also led to really mastering the few we had.

Another clue is we used to wear down the frame so much that it gave us a larger surface of contact instead of 2 small points of contact today.

Anyway, I would love to see @irollerboot, @tryhardtri or anyone motivated trying to recreate the conditions of those perfectly executed backslides.
