What does it mean to be clean? 🤔

Preventing skin infections requires a multi-targeted approach to hygiene.

Let's break down the components of clean ➡️

1. Clean from debris 🧼

Physically cleaning your skin, equipment, and mats means removing sweat, oils, dirt, blood and other organic material.

Getting rid of debris is critical. It clears surfaces of "organic load" so they can be effectively disinfected.

❗Clean does not equal disinfected. Pathogens can be left behind.

Clean skin or equipment by wiping it down with a sanitary cloth or towel. Foaming soaps can also help to lift debris from surfaces.

2. Disinfect 🦠

Disinfecting reduces harmful microbes that cause infection and illness.

⚠️ Many (even powerful) antimicrobials don't deal well with organic debris that physically blocks their mechanism of action.

Clean before you disinfect to ensure your sanitizing agent works effectively to eliminate pathogens.

Some sanitizing products can damage skin and materials. Use specialized antimicrobial agents that are nontoxic and safe on skin for daily use.

3. Dry 🌬️

Bacteria and fungus thrive in warm, dark environments (like your gym bag).

Kit should be cleaned, disinfected, and dried with a towel asap after training. Once you get home, take your equipment out of the gym bag and place it somewhere well ventilated--ideally in the sun.

Keeping cleaned kit and skin dry takes away the environment microbes need to replicate.

4. Deodorize 🚫

Gym bags, clothing, and equipment can develop a high bacterial or fungal load when not kept clean. Once embedded in materials, microbes omit foul odors.
