We pulled this pipe out of the ground and shook it. Look what came out 👀

Corrugated pipe buried directly in dirt is one of the most common drainage mistakes we see.

Over time roots work their way into the pipe through the perforations. Once they’re in they grow, they spread, and eventually block the flow of water entirely. The pipe stops draining and leads to backups in the system.

The fix is simple. Wrap the pipe in a filter sock or bed it in gravel to keep roots and soil out. It takes a few extra minutes during installation and saves you from replacing a system that should have lasted decades.

Don’t let roots make the decision for you 🌳🪾 by @romanconstructionsvcs

Here’s the truth … you are never guaranteed on the condition of your concrete when it arrives. Mix design is one thing. Field conditions are another. Weather, haul time, heat, etc. all of it affects how that truck shows up.

So in the first 10 minutes, we pour a small batch and check the slump. If it needs a few gallons, we add them.

Here’s why it matters:

Workability. The concrete needs to spread evenly, sink into the right spots and settle properly. If it’s too stiff, none of that happens right.

Finishing window. Once it’s poured, the clock starts. Your crew needs enough time to run control joints and finish the surface correctly. Concrete that’s too dry closes that window fast.

Cracking. Concrete that dries too fast shrinks too fast. That’s how you get early cracks that have nothing to do with the mix design and everything to do with conditions nobody accounted for.

The concrete doesn’t care about your schedule. You work at its pace and sometimes that means making a small adjustment in the first 10 minutes so the next 4 hours go right.

This is normal. This is field experience 😉 by @romanconstructionsvcs

The one mistake that ruins concrete pours is …. messing up the water level in the concrete mix! Too much or too little water in your concrete mix can ruin everything. Here’s how:

1. Workability: Too soupy and it’s unmanageable; too stiff and you’ll break your back placing it.

2. Dry Time: It might dry so fast you can’t finish, or so slow that finishing takes far longer than planned.

3. Strength: Water out of balance weakens the concrete’s integrity.

4. Imperfections: Expect cracks, divots, and a rough finish if the mix isn’t right.

Balance that water, your concrete depends on it! by @romanconstructionsvcs

Texas heat can be tough on fresh concrete. ☀️

When temperatures are extremely high, fresh concrete can lose moisture very quickly, especially at the surface. If that happens too fast, it can increase the risk of surface cracking and affect how the concrete cures.

That’s why during hot Texas summers, we prefer to pour early in the morning when possible and properly cure the concrete after it’s finished.

On hot days, that can mean keeping the concrete moist so it doesn’t lose water too quickly. This gives the concrete better conditions to cure and gain strength over time.

We’ve seen firsthand how quickly Texas heat can start affecting fresh concrete. Proper curing matters, especially when temperatures are pushing 100°+☀️ by @romanconstructionsvcs

Most homeowners walk past their cracked sidewalk every day and put it off. The longer you wait the more it spreads and the more it costs.

This is what the replacement looks like. Demo, pour, and fresh concrete built to last.

If your sidewalk looks like the before, DM us. 📩 by @romanconstructionsvcs

Control joints are intentional lines cut or worked into concrete to guide where cracking happens.

All concrete cracks. That’s just the reality of the material. Control joints make sure those cracks happen along a predetermined line where they’re less visible rather than randomly across the surface where they’re not.

Next time you walk across a driveway or sidewalk look down. Those lines are doing more work than you think. by @romanconstructionsvcs
