My erratic wanderings led me to Franz Liszt’s house in Weimar, where a student recital was about to begin. Always a treat to listen to young musicians just starting their careers. taken in Weimar, Germany by @romapete55

While it’s obvious that Leipzig, like all German cities, took a pounding in World War 2, there are still a fair number of surviving older buildings. I don’t know whether they are restorations or were lucky in the 1940s, but a walk around the old city center is always rewarding. taken in Leipzig, Germany by @romapete55

Walking the walls in Dubrovnik. It’s possible to walk the complete circuit of the old city walls of Dubrovnik. The complete distance is 1.9 km but with a lot of stairs involved, it feels longer. But in return for your cardio, you get wonderful views of the city and the surrounding area. taken in Dubrovnik - Old City by @romapete55

Today we took an hour long boat ride from Split to the island of Hvar and the town of the same name. From the fortress above it we got a commanding view. Then a taxi took us over mountain roads to the town of Stari Grad. The name means “Old Town” in Croatian, and indeed it is, having been founded by Greeks in the 4th century BC. Traces of Greek walls remain. A handsome cat greeted us. Our driver took us back to Hvar via back roads, showing us lavender fields, more traces of the Greeks and spectacular views of the Croatian coast. The weather was less than ideal but we still had a great time. taken in Hvar, Splitsko-Dalmatinska, Croatia by @romapete55

Walking around Zadar, Croatia, taking pictures. First a Roman town, of which some traces remain, then passing to the Byzantine empire for some centuries, an early Croatian kingdom, then to Venice, the Ottomans, Austria, Yugoslavia and finally independent Croatia since 1991. A lot of history in a small space! taken in Zadar, Croatia by @romapete55

Today we took the short ride up to Fažana, 20 minutes or so north of Pula, and boarded a boat that took us to the Brijuni National Park, situated on archipelago of 14 islands. It turns out that Tito spent most of his time there while President of Yugoslavia, so there is an interesting photo exhibit covering both his public and private lives, along with Istrian sheep, jackdaws, and assorted other wildlife, along with handsome landscapes. taken in Nacionalni park Brijuni by @romapete55

A walk around the Roman Amphitheater of Pula, a very well preserved specimen dating to the reign of Augustus. It’s not very crowded either and it’s a beautiful spring day so all in all a great excursion to Roman rubble. taken in Pula, Croatia by @romapete55

Continuing with our Habsburg theme, day we took a bus ride out to Miramare, a castle built by a Habsburg archduke around 1860, when this part of Italy belonged to Austria. It became a favorite hideout of the Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) in her efforts to avoid the stifling court in Vienna. Sisi probably didn’t have to put up with all the tourists! taken in Castello Di Miramare, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy by @romapete55

The final day of the trip and I decided to pay a visit to Parc Güell, a bit north of the center of Barcelona and home to Antoni Gaudí for many years. Greenery, architecture, spectacular views, Parakeets, even a cat. It lacks only a cafe. If there is one, I didn’t find it. Otherwise a splendid day. taken in Parc Güell by @romapete55
