▸ Scattered Sea • Lia Sáile • 14' • Germany • 2025 • Category: Best Short Film (Experimental) Moving between magical realism, performance and documentary, Scattered Sea is an exploration of how people can connect with each other across borders in a multi-relationally diverse world with its cracks of entangled historical traumas, a fractured present, power imbalances and a deep longing for belonging. 17 performers from North Africa and Europe interact and relate to each other, creating hybrid spaces, intertwining, seeking closeness. The film was shot across Morocco, Malta, and Germany. This geopolitical triangle reflects layered colonial legacies and contemporary frictions between Europe and the MENA region. Through minimal gestures the performers inscribe and unsettle space. Moments of proximity and distance unfold; ruins, gardens, and streets are roamed, each path seemingly returning toward the sea. Symbols are traced and deconstructed, pomegranates dissected as a river overflows on ornamental tiles, invading interior space. The search for remnants transforms into an act of scattering traces — daring fragile beginnings. Embedding theories by philosophers such as Édouard Glissant’s ‘opacité’, honouring the unknown and unknowable, and Hannah Arendt’s ‘natality’, the potential within every beginning to open unforeseen paths, cultural memory, decolonial inquiry, and historiographic critique converge. Counter-narratives resist linear temporality and binary world orders, proposing instead a poetics of multiplicity and renewal. A space opens for social and aesthetic imaginaries attuned to plural futures, as amid twilight a new island is built between continents on the sea. @liasaile 🎥 Rome Independent Cinema Festival 🎥 📍 @casadelcinema #RICF2026 #RomeIndependentCinemaFestival by @romecinemafest

▸ 2M/Solitudes • Roger Sinha • 23' • Canada • 2022 • Category: Best Short Film (Experimental) “2m/Solitudes” is a poetic cine-dance meditation, exploring internal states resulting from isolation and absence of others. Originally inspired by experiences related to the global pandemic, the film dives into the daily life of four female characters facing different challenges related to being alone and kept apart from others. Immersed in their own colourful, but lonely worlds, eventually, they find a way to transcend solitude, overcome isolation, and reconnect in new unexpected ways. Imagined and produced by a team of exceptional creatives, the five scenes of the film evoke states of agitation, insecurity, melancholy counterbalanced by moments of hope, acceptance, resilience and connection. Roger Sinha’s powerful choreographies and Damian Siqueiros’s exquisite visual universe are accompanied here by a soundtrack composed and performed by a trio of exceptional musicians: Tim Brady on electric guitar, Helmut Lipsky on violin, and Shawn Mativestsky on Indian tabla and percussions. Each scene is introduced by a poem recited by invisible voice bearing witness of the intensity and the depth of the characters’ inner experiences. As the film progresses, the four dancers eventually cross paths in a large white open space, a sign of transformation and new beginning. They wear square skirt like structures, attached to their waists, representing the socially defined shape of their personal spaces. Keeping the distance, but connecting symbolically, they spin and dance in their square skirts like modern dervishes reaching out and celebrating their renewed capacity for connection. @sinhadanse 🎥 Rome Independent Cinema Festival 🎥 📍 @casadelcinema #RICF2026 #RomeIndependentCinemaFestival by @romecinemafest

▸ Made in X • Sofia Ivanova-Kozhevnikova • 5' • United Kingdom • 2025 • Category: Best Short Film (Experimental) Blending raw documentary realism with surreal, stylised dreamscapes, visual activist film MADE IN X follows a young immigrant navigating life on the margins of a society that sees her as a label before a person. From workplace microaggressions to housing discrimination, her daily struggles are interwoven with poetic sequences where traditional garments, textures, and memories become tools of resistance and an escape. As fashion transforms into a language of identity and protest, the film explores how origin defines worth - not only for fashion items, but for people as well. 🎥 Rome Independent Cinema Festival 🎥 📍 @casadelcinema #RICF2026 #RomeIndependentCinemaFestival by @romecinemafest
