Rome once deliberately flooded Piazza Navona. Yes, really.

From the 17th century until the mid-19th century, the square was partly flooded on August weekends for the Romans’ refreshment and entertainment.

Look at its outline, too: it preserves the shape of Domitian’s ancient stadium, built in AD 86. Today, the fountains tell another story—including Bernini’s Nile, Ganges, Danube and Río de la Plata.

Beyond Rome, the landscape opens into blue.

Lake Bolsena in northern Lazio is Europe’s largest lake of volcanic origin. Two islands, Bisentina and Martana, rise from its waters, while the town of Bolsena has roots reaching back to the third century BC.

There is a connection to England, too: Bolsena is a stop on the historic Via Francigena pilgrimage route from Canterbury to Rome.
