🇮🇹 ABATE LUIGI

🇬🇧 STATUE OF ABBOT LOUIS
Abbot Louis is one of six talking statues in Rome. It is located today in Piazza Vidoni, on the side wall of the Basilica of St. Andrea della Valle.
The statue was found in the foundations of Palazzo Vidoni, in the area of the Theatre of Pompey. It is a late Roman sculpture, probably representing a high magistrate: it seems that the name derives from a similarity with a sacristan of the nearby Church of the Sudario, the abbot Luigi (Louis in English).
The statue has often been the object of vandalism: the head, in particular, has been stolen several times and replaced with a copy.

🇮🇹 VIA FRANCIGENA

🇬🇧 FOUNTAIN OF THE BARREL
The Fountain of the Barrel was built in 1927 by Pietro Lombardi with allusion to the main peculiarity of the Trastevere district, known for the presence of taverns and restaurants.
The Fountain of the Barrel is formed by a base on which you can see a barrel, from whose central hole a jet of water pours out into the underlying vat. The barrel is flanked by two one-litre wine casks. It is interesting to remember here that the Romans traditionally use different sizes for wine: "sighs" or "subheading" corresponds to a tenth of a liter, "altar boy" a fifth of a liter, "quarter" a quarter of a liter.

🇮🇹 CONCLAVE

On November 29th 1268, in Viterbo, Pope Clement IV died.
The cardinals met promptly to elect the new Pope, but after months of debate they had not yet managed to agree.
In June 1270 the local population lost patience and attacked the Palace of the Popes, locking the cardinals ("cum clave", with the key) in the great hall of the Palace and then even removing part of the roof, so as to force them to decide as soon as possible who to elect as new Pope.
The cardinals, abandoned to bad weather, had to hurry and on September 1st 1271 Gregory X was elected. The event was so sensational that in 1274 the new rules of the conclave, which have remained in force until today, were made official.

🇮🇹 ACCADDE OGGI A ROMA

🇬🇧 ON THIS DAY IN ROME
On October 10th 12 BC it was possible to assist to the fourth known passage of Halley's Comet.
According to some, its appearance would explain the famous Star of Bethlehem that guided the Three Kings to the Nativity.
The British astronomer Edmond Halley understood that a comet used to be seen in the sky at regular intervals. He was the first one to realize the periodicity of the comet that has since been named after him. He was also the first to calculate its orbit when he discovered that the most famous comet peeped into the sky about every 76 years.
In 1301 the comet will also pass over Giotto's head, who will take inspiration to depict a star with a long shining tail in his Adoration of the Three Wise Men.

🇬🇧 STREET OF THE ARCH OF THE "DONUT"
The strange toponym derives from the ancient Roman ruin (about 10 meters high) that we can still admire today among the buildings: it is the only remaining stretch of the ancient "Agrippa's Baths" and corresponds to half of the large circular hall, the fulcrum of the entire complex.
The baths built by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, son-in-law of Augustus, were the oldest public baths in Rome. Until the XVII century the hall was almost entire, as documented by some drawings of the time, but it disappeared in 1621, during the works of urban planning carried out at the behest of Gregory XV.

🇬🇧 THE ROAD OF THE CAT
Via della Gatta takes its name from the life-size marble cat found in the nearby "Temple of Isis", now walled up on the first cornice of Palazzo Grazioli.
According to tradition, the small statue was placed here in memory of a cat who, having seen a child in danger on the cornice of the palace, thanks to her continuous meowing would have attracted the attention of his mother, who was able to save him before seeing him fall into the void.
There is another mysterious legend related to this cat: in the direction in which the animal looks should be buried a mysterious treasure, but obviously no one has been able to locate it so far.

🇮🇹 ACCADDE OGGI A ROMA

🇬🇧 ON THIS DAY IN ROME
On October 9th 1958 Pope Pius XII, the Pontiff of the Second World War and the excommunication of the Communists, died in Castel Gandolfo.
He was severely criticized by some historians for his “silences”, that is the lack of a condemnation from his side against Nazism during the Second World War: for this reason, he received the nickname of “The Pope of Hitler”. The laborious process of rehabilitation of his figure is still today in act.

🇬🇧 QUINTILI'S VILLA
The Quintili's Villa was the largest and most magnificent residence of the Roman suburbs.
Originally the villa belonged to the Quintili brothers, both Consuls in 151 AD. Their wealth and fortune, however, aroused the greed of the Emperor Commodus, who accused them of having conspired against him and in 182-183 had them killed, appropriating their property.
Commodus, who loved to live there because of the tranquility of the countryside and the benefits of the thermal baths in the villa, transformed the entire complex into a huge and luxurious imperial villa.
