What is Happening to “Black Eden’s” Casa Blanca Hotel in Idlewild, Michigan?
Nonprofit Inspires Housing and Learning for Sustainable Future
February 2, 2022
Due to segregation Idlewild, Michigan was established in 1915 a year-round vacation resort for Blacks. Located within the Manistee National Forest Idlewild’s scenic and natural beauty provided first class accommodations and vacation activities for Black vacationers thereby, earning the name Black Eden. The Casa Blanca Hotel was the biggest and the best hospitality venue within Idlewild.
During the Jim Crow era not only vacationers but, musicians, singers, dancers, writers, political thinkers descended on Idlewild for a place to refresh, entertain, engage in sharing ideas. These included Aretha Franklin, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Della Reese, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Jackie Wilson, Duke Ellington, W. E. B. Dubois, Charles Waddell Chesnutt, Zora Neale Hurston, Dr. Charles Drew, and others. The Casa Blanc Hotel offered first class lodging and hospitality service to these notable guests.
The historical thirty-five room Casa Blanca hotel built in 1950 has laid vacant for over forty years. It is currently in the early stages of restoration by 1st Neighbor, a community-based nonprofit. 1st Neighbor is a trio of black educators, Ms. Betti Wiggins, Dr. Charlene Austin, and Dr. Ida Short. The educators’ vision for the Casa Blanc Hotel is to preserve the Hotel’s cultural legacy as a Green Book site, establish a museum, housing for veterans, several B&B suites for cultural tourist and a transformative educational and training center for youth and the wider community.
