Education through Film : The Dakota 38

In the bitter cold, every year, the people ride, in remembrance of their ancestors.

In the spring of 2005, Jim Miller, a Native spiritual leader and Vietnam veteran, found himself in a dream riding on horseback across the great plains of South Dakota.

Just before he awoke, he arrived at a riverbank in Minnesota and saw 38 of his Dakota ancestors hanged.

At the time, Jim knew nothing of the largest mass execution in United States history, ordered by Abraham Lincoln on December 26, 1862.

"When you have dreams, you know when they come from the creator...

I tried to put it out of my mind, yet it's one of those dreams that bothers you night and day."

Four years later, embracing the message of the dream, Jim and a group of riders retrace the 330-mile route of his dream on horseback from Lower Brule, South Dakota to Mankato, Minnesota to arrive at the hanging site on the anniversary of the execution.

This is the story of their journey, the blizzards they endure, the Native and Non-Native communities that house and feed them along the way, and the dark history they are beginning to wipe away.

The Characters of Shugyo, are these: 修行. Meaning, Cultivating Conduct.

Everyone is a teacher. Every circumstance, is a Dojo in which we refine ourselves.

Shugyo 修行, is a synonym for Practice Awakening.

A way to approach all actions, bringing them within the sphere of awakening.

When able to apply the qualities developed, to conflicts and challenges, begins the understanding that life functions as, the supreme method of practice.

Shugyo 修行, is to train the whole being, in the most profound manner.

Taking the wisdom of awakening itself as the basis of training. This manifests as, nothing not encompassed within practice.

Shugyo 修行, in Budo tradition is austere training, going far beyond, standard practice (Keiko).

Engaging in a deep forging of the body and heart/mind. A purification likened to the process of refining ore into a sword of the finest steel.

The hammer striking the sword represents, difficulties that come from life and Zen training.

If the sword is cold, the hammer will break the sword rather than transform the metal into a blade of excellence.

Where does the fire come from that makes the metal malleable and strong?

Working with the breath in daily life.

Second, from the vow to benefit all beings. When these elements are hot, the blows of the hammer are transformative.

Through the Principle of Shugyo 修行, the self falls away, as the higher goal of Kenshin Taiichi (sword mind and body are one) can be realized, along with Heijoshin, a peaceful mind that is calm in all circumstances.

Shugyo 修行 is an internal path of, enduring hardship. An immersion in demanding training.

Cutting through the duality of self, the world and others. A practice in which one strives to overcome oneself, as one practices, the Art, of Self Mastery by @ronin47_60

Looking back on the memory of, the dance we shared neath the stars above.

For a moment, all the world was right. How could I have known, we'd ever say goodbye.

And now, I'm glad I didn't know, the way it all would end, the way it all would go.

My life, is better left to chance. I could have missed the pain, but I'd've had to miss the dance.

It feels like an attack when you are not willing or able to acknowledge the ways you are harming me.

I refuse the reversal in which naming the pattern of harm becomes the offense, while the conduct of harm remains beyond discussion.

Unfortunately, your victim / villain passage is a projection of entitlement. A closed loop of self anointed absolution.

Holding yourself above the process of introspection and accountability to those who are harmed is not humility but the authoring of your own limitations.

Because I care about you 🤍 I will not become an enabler.
