sor with sorkest (Codarts Pop Orchestra) in Het Concertgebouw (2022)

In 2021, rapper sor (yes, with a small ‘s’) approached me for a concert in Het Concertgebouw. He was thinking of the Codarts Pop Orchestra. I went to Amsterdam to meet him and his manager, Aijda Farag Saad. The following week he was in my studio to discuss the concert. After that I started arranging. In May 2022 we rehearsed twice in New Grounds: sor, the Codarts Pop Orchestra (53 musicians: 23 string players, 18 wind players, 1 pianist, 1 bassist, 2 percussionists and 8 backing vocalists), Ley (beatmaker) and special guests Rotjoch, Bully, Ray Fuego, Sef, Acid! (Dashaeno, Damy, Smitty) and Wibi Soerjadi.

The concert on May 26 - with the one and only Remko Luijten for the sound design - was a resounding success, with great reviews (including NRC and Hiphop In Je Smoel). It was magical. Unfortunately, it remained a one-time event and was not recorded for television.
Fortunately, there were cameras and a compilation of the concert was put online. Admittedly with limited camera angles and - at times - distorted sound, but it is something.

This was a rather special project: sor makes fantastic music and it was an honor to arrange and conduct it for him.

But above all: the fantastic musicians of Codarts (Jazz, Pop and Classical Music), who did such a bizarrely good job. That too is quite an honor: to work with such nice and good students.

Anyway, let’s hope for a follow-up.
