Growing up watching and helping family who worked in the disability sector taught me from a young age that no two kids fit into the same box. And that understanding has only grown since becoming a parent myself.

Some kids are medicated, some aren’t. Some have had foundations and support in place so early that you’d never know the challenges they’ve faced. Others have struggles you can see, and some are fighting battles nobody knows about.

And we’re no different. I’ve sat in meetings I wish I never had to attend, received phone calls and had to advocate to make sure my own kids receive the education and support they deserve.

I’ve stood beside friends and watched them completely exhaust themselves fighting to put the right foundations in place for their children. Not just to get through school, but to give them the best possible chance to learn, grow and function as adults. Because it starts when they’re little.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach to raising neurodivergent kids. What works for one won’t necessarily work for another.

One thing I’ll always stand by is that your child’s wellbeing comes first.

To every parent fighting to be heard, questioning themselves, advocating behind closed doors and doing everything they can for their kids, DON’T STOP. ❤️

His ritual, his words, his moment. What’s said in the helmet stays in the helmet. We’re just there to remind him that no matter what happens on that track, he’s got us.

Not sure what I expected, but I thought I’d be packing snacks, not pulling bikes apart like I work at a dealership. 💀😂 #motomum #motokids #dirtbikes #motocross #motofamily taken in Australia by @rookiemotomum

This sound came across our TV tonight and I instantly stopped.

Our son turned to me and said, “Mum, that sounds so cool!” Then he saw my face and asked, “Mum, do you not like the bagpipes?”

I hadn’t even realised my expression had changed.

But instantly I was taken back to a phone call from my husband. I was three months pregnant with our daughter, he was away for work, and he was calling to tell me one of his colleagues had been killed.

Not just another member of the thin blue line, which hits close enough to home as it is. This was someone we knew. Someone my husband admired. Someone we’d visited during our little drop-ins at work so Carter could see the police cars and Dad’s workmates.

Almost 12 years of being a police wife and it doesn’t get any easier.

We’ve watched families bury their loved ones because of this job. A job they worked so hard to get into and gave so much of themselves to.

What used to be just the sound of bagpipes now takes me straight back to those moments and the families whose lives changed forever.

And how do you explain any of that to your little boy when all he hears is music?

You don’t.

Because that fear is mine to carry, not theirs. They’re just children, and I hope with everything in me that they never have to understand firsthand why this sound breaks my heart. 💙

One thing this role has taught me pretty quickly is that you start seeing grassroots sport from a completely different perspective.

You see who genuinely wants to see the sport grow, who puts their hand up when there’s work to be done, who only has something to say when things don’t go their way and who quietly does more than anyone will ever know.

And this goes for ALL sporting clubs, not just motorsport.

Here’s what I think people need to understand.

The majority of people running grassroots sporting clubs are volunteers. They’re juggling full-time jobs, families, their own kids’ sports and everything else life throws at them, while putting in what can feel like another full-time job for absolutely nothing.

We have information at our fingertips these days. Social media, websites, event pages, yet volunteers are still spending hours answering questions that could be answered with a quick search.

Don’t get it twisted, genuine questions and concerns should ALWAYS be heard. And yes, the wrong thing does happen within sporting clubs. That absolutely needs to be addressed.

But people also need to understand that committees operate within rules, regulations and requirements they don’t always get to control. Not every decision will suit everyone.

And if you think you can do a better job, put your hand up! Clubs need more people willing to help, not just more opinions.

What blows my mind is that we’re relying on people giving hundreds of unpaid hours to keep community sport alive, yet there’s no way to claim those hours on a tax return and very little incentive for the contribution they make.

Something needs to change in how we recognise, support and treat volunteers.

At the end of the day, this isn’t about egos, titles or recognition. It’s about keeping grassroots sport alive for our kids and future generations.

Without volunteers, there are no clubs. Without clubs, there is no grassroots sport.

And I think we’ve forgotten just how much we’re asking of the people keeping it alive. 🏁
