Room57 Gallery is pleased to present “FIGURE IT OUT,” a group exhibition of abstract painters and ceramicists whose work gestures toward the human, and the otherworldly presence, without ever fully depicting it. The exhibition brings historic works from the 20th century into dialogue with a younger generation of contemporary abstract artists.

Milanesi’s paintings unfold within an unrestrained ecology, where accumulations of material expose layers of possibility, evoking both violence and tenderness. Working through a continual negotiation of color, form, and gesture, she embraces a process shaped by both intention and surprise.

Toshiko Takaezu (1922–2011) spent decades perfecting the closed form. Starting in the 1950s, she enclosed her vessels almost entirely, leaving only a tiny opening so gas could escape in the kiln. Once closed, the pots could no longer hold anything, and that’s the point: they crossed over from function into sculpture.

Drawing on Abstract Expressionism, East Asian ink painting, and the Japanese tea ceremony, Takaezu poured and brushed her glazes with a painter’s hand, treating each vessel as a canvas in the round. Many, like this one, hold a small clay rattle sealed inside, so the work is heard as much as seen.

Theodoros Stamos (December 31, 1922 – February 2, 1997) was a Greek-American painter. He is one of the youngest painters of the original group of abstract expressionist painters, which included Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Mark Rothko.

Maria Kreyn (b.1987) is an American artist known for evocative paintings that merge figuration, abstract geometries, and elemental atmospherics. She studied mathematics and philosophy at the University of Chicago and is self taught in painting. While drawing polymathic connections between disparate fields, Kreyn’s works are steeped in the western tradition of painting. Deriving her technical foundations from old master works, Kreyn reframes these techniques and expands their pictorial vocabulary into a realm of stirring emotional narratives, unique personal histories, and surreal fictions. Her expansive canvases are meditations on nature, the body, and the materiality of time.

“I approach making as a vital opportunity to examine perception and signification. My work engages with ceramics as a polyphonic medium: one that speaks in multiple registers simultaneously. Within simple constraints, such as the format of the mug, vase, or torus, orchestrations of surface, form, materiality, and function become the central elements. Many projects revolve around broad, reverential notions of the vessel, the body, and language. Attempts are made to continually dissect processes, revisit forms, and reframe themes to agitate evolution and antagonize static thinking. Objects are focused upon as vital witnesses and participants, reflections and poems, animate and imagined.” - @maxwellmustardo
