Utility & Beauty-
I think so often we attribute Utility with blandness, with items and actions that are unceremoniously going about their jobs. And beauty is left to pretty things that crumple under the lightest touch.
I can’t help but think that these things do have a place together. In the high arches of a church that’s survived the ages, or in the meal a bear brought her cubs. Countless things that hold both Function and Heart.
I can’t help but notice this in my own work. The attention I can give to small details. The care to make sure something lasts a lifetime. And a lifetime of caring for what we already have.
I think in everything there can be function, and heart, and there’s always-

The marriage of Form and Function-
I can’t help but notice that in the time we live that Form has become replaced with lifeless designs, and Function dies quick with planned obsolescence

It brings me much Joy to create in spite of that. To make something beautiful that will last a lifetime. To bring what is intangible and human back to the tools we live with.

I was always taught to put my best foot forward with any work I do, and here is no exception. What is the point of making a broom? Solely to sweep? Or is it a chance to bring us closer to the beauty of creation, and the glory of having anything worth maintaining.

We always have a chance to put our best foot forward, and we always have-

The many becoming one-
This form of hand broom has always struck me as especially meaningful, each individually bundle coming together to make a broom- Each fiber to make a bundle

This too is the nature of community, many disparate peoples and groups becoming whole. One becoming apart of All, and All becoming One.

We often forget this all important fact when it comes time to take part in our community, allowing our differences to divide us instead of bond us. We forget the love we want to share to those who struggle as soon as they begin to show it.

This form has always served as a point to meditate on this for me, I hope that we can continue to learn to be there for others as we need for ourselves. Here’s to community and-

Wing of Turkey, Tail of Hawk-
It’s always fascinated me how many hand brooms draw their names from birds.
I’d like to know how it came to be, maybe some lone family with an eye on the sky; Or some great coincidence that makers made together?
Its one of the many places in my craft that leaves me wonderstruck, a simple naming convention that pulls at my heartstrings
My teacher told me that the first Broomsquiers were taught by the birds, who came down and showed us how they swept the clouds away with their wings.
I know better than that now, having looked into the history of this craft more- Even still I fondly look at the tale he taught me when I was younger.
It may not have been the birds, but here’s to folktales and-

The first Broom of many-
A Rooster Tail- For those that Rise to Work
I’ve spent quite a while figuring out how to set up production and I’ve finally gotten to work.
It’s taken a good deal of patience but I finally have some tangible results from the work I’ve put in.
Despite how long it’s taken I feel that the process is a reward in itself
While I do hope to support myself with this craft, the process is the reason I feel so dear to it-
The crinkle of broomcorn
The smell of stalks soaking to plait
The roughness the comes to your hands after you sit down to wind
- All of these things make it worth doing, without regard to whether anyone else cares- to whether or not sell a million or five
I’m proud to be able to create something new each time I sit down at my table- no AI needed here
Here’s to the process of craft and-

I’ve spent the last couple of months preparing for production-
During this time I’ve designed and made a rudimentary kick winder, gathered as many tools as I could, and of course found a supplier of broomcorn.
There’s been times when it’s been challenging to find where to go next, or when lack of support from those around me felt insurmountable. That being said, I’ve finally got here. The first leg of many of many on this journey I’m taking is over and I’m well on my way to setting up shop.
As for now though, I’m going to start getting a stockpile of brooms made up, tagged, and ready to be sold. I’d like to thank Caddy Supply Co. for being a reliable source of both knowledge, and broomcorn.
Until next time and remember There’s always-
