Recently, Maryland has been basking in the warmth of some sunny, warm spring days. It seemed as though spring finally had arrived and winter was behind us. My tulips started to pop up, the daffodils started to bloom. I got the yard furniture out and started some writing on the back deck.

My urge to get out in the garden and rake the leaves, and prune back spent blooms and dead foliage was primal. But I hesitated to get started...

And today we saw the return of the cold rain and some snow. *Phenology* is the study of the cyclical timing of plants and animals, especially in relationship to the climate. With a changing climate, plants are blooming 10, 20, and sometimes 30 days sooner than they did in the 1800s. Just because there are a few warm days in a row does not mean that insects are ready to come out from their winter protection. Their food sources may not even be ready yet.

So, “leave the leaves” for now. Wait until there are some key seasonal indicators of to start pruning and disturbing the soils.
