Recently I read that household dust is one of the biggest sources of microplastics in our homes, so I started looking into where it actually comes from.

And what surprised me most was that some of the biggest contributors are things we rarely think about.

We think plastic bottles, food containers and packaging. But synthetic clothes and textiles, like carpets, rugs, curtains and upholstery can all release tiny plastic particles through everyday wear, friction and washing.

I’m not sharing this because I think we should throw everything plastic away.

I think we should use what we already have, look after it, repair it where we can, and swap things gradually when they genuinely need replacing.

And next time we do need something new, choose natural, plastic-free materials where possible.

I used to think my body was the problem.
Now I know it was asking for different conditions.

For years, I treated every symptom like a separate issue.
Something to fix.
Something to push through.
Something to silence and carry on with.

But my body wasn’t failing me.
It was responding. 🤍

To stress.
To overload.
To what I was eating.
To what I was using on my skin.
To what I was cleaning with.
To what I was breathing in.
To what I was carrying emotionally.

And when I started changing those things, little by little,
my body started changing too.

Not perfectly.
Not overnight.
But enough to make me realise that healing is not only about treating symptoms.
It’s also about creating better conditions for your body to come back into balance.

I think so many of us are taught to ignore the whispers until they become screams.

But your body is not always working against you.
Sometimes it’s trying to guide you. 😌 by @rootedwithjo

Kinda love this trend 🌿

Not because any of these things are particularly “chic” - but because caring about the planet, our health and the way we live really does matter. 🫶

Growing a little of your own food. Reading the ingredients. Choosing fewer chemicals. Buying less, repairing more. Picking up litter even when it isn’t yours.

None of it has to be perfect to matter.

Small, conscious choices add up - for our homes, our health and the planet. 💚

What would you add to the list? by @rootedwithjo

before buying something new, i’m trying to shop my own wardrobe first

it’s so easy to see a new trend and suddenly feel like our wardrobes are missing something when, most of the time, we probably already have more than enough

so i had a little wardrobe declutter — tried everything on, rediscovered a few things i’d completely forgotten about and let go of the pieces that just don’t feel like me anymore

two empty hangers isn’t exactly a dramatic declutter 😅 but that’s kind of the point

i have a little more space now — not space to fill with something new
just space

and somehow a clearer wardrobe always gives me a clearer head too 🌿

maybe have a little shop of your own wardrobe before you shop anywhere else 🤍 by @rootedwithjo

Does anyone else think there’s something really calming about conkers? They’re so smooth and lovely to touch - I’m always playing with them in my pockets. 🤗🌰

I like to keep a few in whichever coat I’m wearing and usually pop one into everyone else’s pocket too. 🤭

Just like my mum and grandma, I also put a few under the bed. In my family, we believed they absorbed negative energy and helped you sleep more peacefully. Whether they really do or not, I love carrying on this little tradition.🤎

This year, I’m also finally trying homemade conker laundry detergent. Conkers contain natural saponins that work a bit like soap, so it’s made with just conkers and water.

If it’s all natural, costs nothing and lets me use what’s already around me, I’m all in.

It’s somewhere between borscht and botwinka (a Polish soup made with young beetroot and beet leaves) 🫜 except I keep adding so much to it that it turns into a whole meal: beetroot and beet leaves, potatoes, carrots, onion, bulgur, chickpeas, plenty of parsley, plus my homemade beetroot kvass.

Finished with sour cream and lots of dill 🌿 - or not, if you don’t fancy it.

I rarely follow recipes or measure anything, so every pot turns out a bit different.🤷‍♀️ But I’ve been making some version of this all summer and I’m still not bored of it.

Should I try to write down the recipe next time? 🫶 by @rootedwithjo

ROMO popped up on my feed recently and I just felt it right away 😂

the latest trends, seasonal must-haves, another thing Instagram says I “need”… I’m good, thanks.

so what’s your ROMO? what does everyone else seem to want that you’re quite happy to miss out on? 👀

mine is definitely buying new when I can repair, reuse or find it secondhand.

houseplants don’t count, obviously 🫣 by @rootedwithjo

how else are you supposed to eat these little things? 🍅
straight from the bowl, like snacks. like sweets.

but today I also made the most delicious pasta sauce with them - sungolds in the pan with garlic, olive oil and herbs, gently cooked and then blended with a little cream cheese that needed using up and lots of fresh basil. 🌿

so simple. SO good. by @rootedwithjo

the internet loves a perfect eco swap. real life doesn’t work like that. 🤷‍♀️

i’ve replaced some things. kept others
i still use plastic. i still own non-stick. i still wear synthetic fibres

because throwing away something that still works just to replace it with a more “sustainable” version doesn’t make much sense to me

maybe the goal isn’t a perfectly plastic-free, low-waste home.

maybe it’s buying less
using things properly
and choosing better when something actually needs replacing

small swaps matter. just not everything at once.

save this for the next time sustainability starts feeling like another thing you’re supposed to get perfect 💚 by @rootedwithjo

This tiny jar gets HOT 🌶️

Castor oil.
Cayenne pepper.
That’s it.

Capsaicin — the compound that gives cayenne its heat — is used in many warming pain relief creams for a reason.

Castor oil is rich in ricinoleic acid, known for its anti-inflammatory properties.

This blend is often used to help with sore muscles, stiff joints and tension.
The warming effect is REAL.

Patch test first.
And never use on broken or irritated skin. by @rootedwithjo

Another homemade remedy, as promised - and this might be the simplest one yet: clove-infused coconut oil for oil pulling. 🌿

Two ingredients. One traditional Ayurvedic oral-care ritual. And one fewer bottle in the bathroom.

Some research suggests that oil pulling may support gum health and help reduce plaque, while cloves naturally contain eugenol - a compound traditionally used in oral care and studied for its antimicrobial properties.

This is exactly what this space is about: fewer products, more plants and simple rituals made with intention.

Save this natural oral-care ritual for later - and share it with someone who loves a good homemade remedy. 🌿

Eat Your Skincare ✨

Supporting your skin from within is even more important
than what you put on it ✨

and it really doesn’t have to be complicated 🌱💚

This is one of my go-to lately - simple, nourishing and just good.

Mackerel spread:
• 1 tin mackerel (in olive oil)
• 2 olives
• 2 sun-dried tomatoes
• 1 tbsp skyr
• a handful of parsley
• a few walnuts
(optional: a drizzle of olive oil)

Blend everything until creamy ✨

What I love about this:
• omega-3 → supports the skin barrier
• vitamin C → supports collagen
• antioxidants → support that natural glow
• healthy fats → nourish from within

Nothing fancy. Just real foods your body understands.

And if there’s an ingredient you’re not a fan of…
just blend it with the ones you love. 🤗
That’s the easiest way to add more nutrient-dense foods without forcing it 🫶

Save this for later 👇 taken in London, United Kingdom by @rootedwithjo
