AI once removed.
The content is AI generated, the construction is not.

this composition is made up of random crops from 20 different AI images. Even though they may look very complex, the AI produces such similar images that the crops fuse together much more consistently than when i use my original paintings. I think these feel kind of interesting.

You will still see a hard edge here and there as i have not solved all stitching scenarios.

still evolving my image stitching program, but here is a look a current test.

The program:
-takes random crops (grayscale in this instance) from my paintings
-scores them with a visual similarity score
- connects the highest scoring pair
- builds an organic shape by connecting the next most similar image to the existing composition until a certain threshold cannot be met.

I don't know how many different paintings this particular test used, but each square crop is 300x300 pixels; for those of you keeping score at home. This is a 16 tile x 15 tile grid.

i think this one looks like a fish. by @rootist

Can AI reflect a uniquely human experience?
This interdisciplinary work unites philosophy, painting, and machine learning to prove that a seemingly random, abstract collection of marks is actually a coherent, emergent visual system as unique and identifiable as a fingerprint. The dataset consists of physical paintings, born through a principled, non-symbolic artistic process guided by affective feeling. Custom AI models were trained in an attempt to generate these visual systems and their underlying structure—despite the absence of symbols, formal composition, or shared meaning. In this instance, AI is not being used to create novelty, but rather as an objective tool to validate:
Can we share what it feels like to be alive? Not through language or symbol, but through intuitive mark-making.
Does felt experience have a visible structure?
Can a machine learn it?

more to come i hope.

Over the past several months, I have been creating an algorithm that could objectively explore the structure and connectivity of my Rootist paintings. The impetus for this project is fairly straightforward in my mind: Rootism contends we have the ability to express our felt (phenomenal/conscious) experience through mark-making, and the resulting visual system contains emergent, reoccurring, non-symbolic relationships that are unique to the creator. In other words, you can make 1 or 100 Rootist works, but when enough information is provided, you will always reveal the same thing: you. But it is not the You in your profile picture; it is the You that you feel when you are lonely, or in love, or enraged, afraid, hopeful, skeptical, or in the midst of a daydream. It is the structure of your subjective experience. It is not just your feelings on a canvas; these visual systems you create are your unique experience of feeling. All this may seem meaningless or self-evident to some, but to me, this points to the profound possibility that our subjective experiences have a visual structure that can be manifested, repeated, measured, and most importantly shared with others.

If, as stated in the principles of Rootism, we know a visual system is created without the use of symbols and with conscious intent (not random), then that visual system should present a visual structure that is identifiable, even if its meaning or components cannot be defined. Meaning, we should be able to see a structure throughout all an individual's Rootist works, even if we don't know what that structure necessarily means. That is the goal of this algorithm: To try to reveal the visual structure of my Rootist paintings purely through objective processes, in order to support, illustrate, and hopefully help elucidate the claims of Rootism.

This particular set of test results is derived from 12 different paintings.

This is the beginning; I am still working out a few bugs in order to get the script to a point where I can really start to explore.

Lastly, if you have an extra mind to spare, please send it my way; I have clearly lost mine.

I think most artists spend so much time learning to process the rejection of their work, it can be a confusing emotional experience when it is recognized. I know this is true for myself, anyway.

I'm not sure what else to write here except thank you to Ivy at @imur.art.us for the opportunity to share this pursuit, thank you to Tris @trismccall_nj and @jerseycitytimes for the conversation, consideration, and recognition.

Thank you to all of you for taking the time to consider Rootism, I hope some of it resonates with you.

The work on the first slide is by the incredible @artistdaniellescott , please take a moment to view her powerful work. taken in City of Jersey City by @rootist

IMUR presents

Rootism, by Justin Rivenbark
July 11 - Aug 17, 2024
Curator: Ivy Huang

This exhibition will be on view at 67 Greene St, Jersey City, on Thursdays, Fridays, 3pm to 7pm, and Saturdays, 2pm - 6pm, with an opening reception on Thursday, July 11th, from 6pm -8pm

About the exhibition

In today’s technology-driven world, almost everything is digitalized.

AI, computers, and digital tools do not possess self-awareness. Alongside the ongoing debate over whether digital art is real art, Justin Rivernbark’s alternative Rootist Art Theory suggests that human consciousness plays a major role in the creative process, regardless of artistic talent, creativity, or formal training. Rootism calls individual self-awareness in the creation of art.

Symbolism is absent from Rivernbark’s work, replaced by a visual map of the artist’s consciousness. Justin’s work speaks to the audience without language, and can seem as if the viewer is seeing everything and nothing at once.

The process of Rootist art requires the creator to make the decision at the moment, depending then on the viewer’s willingness to perceive. Rootist art aims not to express feelings, but rather the experience of feeling itself. Simply put, this is creation without preconceptions, and ultimately the transmission of phenomenal information into visual expression.

This exhibition presents a challenge to its viewers: is it possible to decipher what we see in human consciousness, does our consciousness communicate with us, and the original question of what counts as real art?
