🐒 Nilgiri Langur – The Silent Sentinel of the Western Ghats – Read more below 👇

Graceful, shy, and found nowhere else on Earth, the Nilgiri Langur (Semnopithecus johnii) is an endemic primate of the Western Ghats. Its glossy black coat and golden-brown head make it one of India’s most striking monkeys, often seen quietly moving through the forest canopy.

🔬 Scientific Details: Family: Cercopithecidae | Genus: Semnopithecus | Length: 60–78 cm (body) | Tail: 68–96 cm Appearance: Glossy black fur with a distinctive golden-brown to reddish-brown head and long tail. Males are generally larger than females.

🌳 Habitat: Endemic to the Western Ghats of India, inhabiting evergreen forests, shola forests, moist deciduous forests, and forest plantations.

🌿 Diet: Primarily folivorous, feeding on young leaves, shoots, fruits, flowers, and seeds. Their specialized digestive system helps break down tough plant material.

⚡ Behavior: Lives in social groups led by a dominant male. Excellent climbers, they spend most of their time in the canopy and communicate using loud calls that echo through the forest.

🐣 Breeding: Breeding occurs throughout the year. After a gestation of about 200 days, females usually give birth to a single infant, which is cared for by the entire group.

🌍 Conservation Status: ⚠️ Vulnerable (VU) — Threatened by habitat loss, fragmentation, hunting, and human disturbance.

The Sri Lanka frogmouth, Sri Lankan frogmouth or Ceylon frogmouth is a small frogmouth found in the Western Ghats of south India and Sri Lanka. Related to the nightjars, it is nocturnal and is found in forest habitats. The plumage coloration resembles that of dried leaves and the bird roosts quietly on branches, making it difficult to see. Each has a favourite roost that it uses regularly unless disturbed. It has a distinctive call that is usually heard at dawn and dusk.

🔬 Scientific Details: Family: Trogonidae | Genus: Harpactes | Length: 28–30 cm Appearance: Males have a crimson-red belly, chestnut head and back, black face and throat, and a white breast band. Females are duller, with olive-brown upperparts and a cinnamon-orange belly.

🌳 Habitat: Found in evergreen forests, moist deciduous forests, and dense wooded valleys of the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka, usually in the shaded mid-canopy.
