Cannot get over how clever Dougal is with picking only the ripe blackberries 💜

Is anyone else’s pup a fab forager?

Happy soggy Sunday, at least the sogginess is by choice today!

Does anyone else’s spaniel get full body shakes when they’re excited?

Throwback Thursday - when Dougal was smaller than Rory! 🤎🧡 (and some Rory throwbacks)

We’ve had lots of new followers recently, so I thought I’d do a post about the boys

Rory 🐶 - Roo is 4, he’s literally everyone’s idea of a perfect dog and gets so much love everywhere we go. He was our ring bearer at our wedding last year and spent the whole day being the centre of attention. He’s the perfect companion, chill in busy spaces and up for climbing any mountain. We got Rory from an amazing breeder who is trying to improve the health of her cavaliers by introducing similar breeds without the health issues that cavs typically suffer from. As a result, he is 62.5% cavalier, 25% Brittany spaniel and 12.5% miniature poodle. The Brittany has given him a love of retrieving and he absolutely loves pointing and hunting for things. The poodle mainly comes out in the form of his bum hair being really curly. And of course, he is very much your typical cavalier at heart. This year, our ambition is to get Rory out on the river on our paddle boards and to get some long hikes done, while improving on some of his trick training🧡

Dougal 🐕 - Doo is 6 months old. We moved to a larger house last autumn and decided the time was right to get another dog. The breeder we got Rory from was planning a litter from Rory’s sister and we expressed interest immediately. This makes him Ro ry’s nephew. Dougal is 43.75% cavalier, 25%working cocker, 25% Brittany spaniel and 6.25% miniature poodle. I think it probably goes without saying that the working cocker in him definitely shows! After assuming he’d be similar in energy levels to Rory, it has been a huge learning curve trying to make sure we are using his working brain in a productive way, we definitely didn’t expect how different his energy levels would be to Rory’s! He is doing so well despite our ignorance and we’re so proud of him. This year I really want to work on training him to be indifferent in highly stimulating environments and hopefully sprinkle in some fun trick training too!🤎

Move over pumpkin spice, it’s time for cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg to take centre stage 🤎🧡🤎

We always talk about Dougal’s training on here, but never about Rory. So today, I thought I’d share a little about our successes, struggles and hopes for the future with Rory.

Something we’re very excited to be starting to learn with Roo is indication and scent work. We’re currently working through the section on the @maherandhounddogtraining hub and we’re finding it lots of fun learning each step!

Most training with Rory is a breeze, he somehow knows instinctively where I’m asking him to stand. Everyone who has ever met Rory falls in love with him immediately, and it’s no wonder, he has the gentlest manners, is ridiculously affectionate, and squeaks loudly in joy whenever he sees someone he loves.

However, Mr Roo is also insanely stubborn, and if he doesn’t think what you are asking is worth doing, he needs lots of bribing. One thing he’s done ever since being a puppy, is back chat. Even if he intends on doing what you ask, he will make sure you know he disapproves and will growl, woof and sing when doing it, even if treats are involved.

Our biggest struggle with Roo is his woofing at noises on the street outside, and knocks at the door, it’s the only thing we haven’t managed to make significant progress on with him. We’re really hoping that by being consistent with our approach, eventually we will have a breakthrough.

OMG guys it turns out Dougal is actually a ghost returned from the grave??? 🪦

We spent all day today at the pumpkin patch, and I was really unsure about how well Doo would cope. He did a stunning job! His biggest struggle was that he didn’t like climbing onto anything, so we kept his four paws on the floor for photos 🐾🎃
