I had this script for ‘Loner’ sitting around collecting dust. Knowing it was probably never going to get made, I decided to spend some time learning something new - and to finally stop running from the thing that feels like it’s chasing me down the street at top speed: AI.

I have mixed feelings about the whole process. On one hand, it’s the most creative I’ve felt in months. I found myself staying up late, tweaking each frame, completely losing track of time. On the other hand, it’s the most dishonest I’ve felt. I was borrowing from some of my favourite movie frames, constantly questioning whether I’d altered them enough to fairly pass them off as my own.

Ultimately, I let myself keep going because this project isn’t going to make any money, which means it’s not taking money away from anyone else either. Even so, it still feels a bit morally murky. It’s an extremely unofficial video that is an experiment more than anything else.

I learned a massive amount in a very short space of time, and as an adult, you don’t often get to experience a learning curve that steep. AI is a fantastic tool for experimenting and visualising, but I sincerely hope it never replaces the magic of filmmaking with real humans and crews.

I’m excited for young filmmakers who will be able to learn so much from these tools, but I implore them to pick up a physical camera, too. It doesn’t have to be an ARRI - your phone works just fine. Some of my fondest memories are making Star Wars spin offs as a teenager, DM for viewing link.

I hope in the future AI will be able credit all the work it’s borrowing from, a paper trail to the fantastic efforts that made it possible. by @rorydewar

I can’t remember who taught me about “What Ifs” but whoever you are I owe you a lot.

When coming up with ideas for artwork I try and paint a picture with some words, starting it with “what if…”.

In this case it was “What if it was a couple embracing, amongst busy traffic, overcoming hopelessness.”

This is how it turned out. One of my favourite ones yet.

I took this photo of Aaron when we were going for a stroll. I think he was eating an apple. It’s not a reel and it’s not in colour so instagram will probably hate it. But I like it. And who cares if the algorithm doesn’t. by @rorydewar

Talk to your friends about things that feel uncomfortable sometimes, listen to their answers, it’ll bring a smile to your face, it did mine. Just maybe don’t do it with a camera crew surrounding you, it will cause you to sweat uncontrollably.

Made this with a bunch of people I’m extremely fond of about a thing that is incredibly important to talk about. I remember calling my mum the night before nervous I wouldn’t ask the right questions, she calmed my nerves by saying something along the lines of “but that’s what you’re good at”.

Not sure I’ve forgiven @jamieglydon for forcing me into the edit the day after Glastonbury but as always he was right. by @rorydewar

The first tattoo I ever got was ‘hope’ so to spend most the year plastering it across various things with a bunch of lovely people has been a joy. It takes a village 🏘️ by @rorydewar

I never did my homework at school and to be perfectly honest I never created anything great at school. I made up for it when making this album with Josh and the team and I think we made something pretty great. If you were to ask me how I came up with this creative I’d use one word - ‘Research’.

I borrowed so much from other creatives to come up with this hopefully unique little world (slide 5 is just a snapshot to the endless mood boards that were created). Walking around with my eyes open and noting the obscene down. Scouring the internet at ungodly hours to discover the weird and wonderful. There is so much we didn’t get to create that excites me, I know one day I’ll pick up the camera and capture the sequel to ‘Loner’, with or without the soundtrack (but let’s hope with).
