Roos embodies the wild side of the Netherlands like no other. What began as bags full of blackberries and chestnuts in her childhood grew into a life as a gardener, ecologist, and foraging guide. Through her foraging walks and workshops, she connects scientific knowledge and practical know-how with personal experience and nature conservation. She dreams of owning a piece of land where she can combine regenerative farming with nature preservation and foraging. 🌱🍄‍🟫I visited Roos at home as part of the project Stadsnatuur, a series for which I venture out with people who are each connected to nature in and on the edges of the city in their own way. They are naturalists, doers, sometimes system changers. Flourishing in the seams of the city, just like the plants and animals they study. Their focus and determination provides a revitalizing counterbalance to the fast paced world and alienation of the natural world just around the corner. 💚Tuesday 14 October, you can join @roosvankroos on a special 1.5-hour urban foraging walk through the center of Breda. Starting from Parade 10 Breda @bredase_maandvandegeschiedenis, near the Stadsnatuur exhibition participants explore the city with fresh eyes, tasting wild urban plants and discovering living history in one walk. See you there? 🌿🌞 by @rosameininger

The Pacific Crest TrailToday is the day we begin our long walk. Starting at the Mexican border, we’ll head north for 4,265 kilometers through desert landscapes, high mountain ranges, ancient forests, and volcanic wilderness. Hoping to reach the Canadian border within six months, but especially to enjoy every adventure the trail will throw at us. 🌵Happy Trails. by @rosameininger

On a field day with urban ecologists Raymond and Julie looking for tree frogs at one of the 16 newly created ponds that have been established in recent years as an ecological corridor for this rare frog and countless other species. How to notice them? Look very very closely in the srubs for a long time until you see one, and suddenly they’re everywhere! Like magic! 🐸 Urban ecologist Raymond moves through hidden corners of the city, which he knows inside out, with a steady stride. He points, listens, counts, connects. His work is both data-driven and intuitive: he advocates for slow landscapes. Raymond monitors meticulously, but above all he leaves a lasting impression through his affection for everything that grows, flutters and teems.I had the chance to briefly walk alongside him as part of Stadsnatuur, a series in which I venture out with people who are each connected to nature in and along the edges of the city in their own way. They are naturalists, doers, sometimes system changers. Flourishing in the seams of the city, just like the plants and animals they study.

More than ever this year, I noticed change in my surroundings and in myself, in ways I think I don’t yet have words for.In the summer, I spent a month caring for two cats, a yurt, and a large vegetable garden. By chance, me and Fien also joined chef Daan to harvest on organic farm De Vloeiweide. My mornings began by slipping barefoot in boots, dew on my legs, opening the greenhouse, picking berries before the wasps awoke, then driving to the farm in Rijsbergen. Three harvests a week, and it just. kept. on. coming. My main interest when it comes to nature lies in what we, as humans, can give back: how we can help, restore, care, and pay attention. Hard work on early winter mornings, ending with hot pea soup. My experience with gardening or working on a farm was, and is, minimal. This year, I mostly harvested what others had sown, so it sometimes felt like the ‘hard’ work had already been done. Nevertheless, it made me more aware of what even a thin layer of soil provides and how essential it is to care for it.What we gave back was relatively small. Weeding, watering, supporting growth, saving seeds. But I do really feel like I got to know the beans, the beets, the in-between so-called ‘weeds’. I harvested carefully around tiger spiders and their beautiful webbs, was in awe by all the life I saw unfolding before my eyes, and am very grateful to have experienced this in all its glory this summer. I truly enjoyed every second of it. Perhaps it might also be what changed me: returning to the same place, following its rhythm, noticing change and finding meaning and calmth in repetition. Thank you @daan.debrouwer @fienkommer @boerderijdevloeiweide @waailand2021 🤎🥕Sometimes I try to write down my thoughts to help organize them and give words to feelings, there is a little piece in Dutch on my substack. by @rosameininger
