If you've been in the same room as Aimara, you know that she is magnetic, powerful. Comfortable in her intelligence.

She is a natural teacher (a white board loves to see her coming), inspiring and passionate community leader, a builder, and tech goddess. She keeps a ladder handy and always offers a helping hand
Because what's the point of being at the top if your gente aren't with you?

She is generous in a mi casa es tu casa way and
always checks in and reminds you she loves you

"You crossed my mind today homie and I wanted to check in. Love you fam 💙"

To be loved by Aimara is a palpable blessing
I am supremely blessed to know her, let alone be her amiga
Words will never be enough to describe her power and how she loves

When we found out the reason we didn't hear back from her last week wasn't that she fell asleep, you can imagine our shock.

We don't know what this week will bring. What we do know is that Aimara is the woman who makes us feel seen, cared for, and loved. Now, we get to surround her and her familia with that same unconditional love.

I have been struggling to put into words everything that has happened over the last few days. What started as worried friends checking in has left so many of us in shock.

Aimara is my family. My son calls her Ta’ Mara, his Tía Aimara. To my husband, she is a homie, a close creative collaborator, and a dear amiga. If you know her, I’m sure that, like the rest of us, you are still processing…

Most of our friendship happened in my cocina, gathered around food, or with cafecito going cold between us because we were too busy talking to drink it. So many sleepovers, cabins and trips, long talks, and giggling like little girls who were supposed to be asleep hours ago.

And every time she asked how I was doing and I said “good,” or answered everything except the question, she would say, “But how are you, homie? How is Jaidie really doing?”

She has done that for so many of us. And I think that is why this hurts so deeply, because she is the one who always asks, and now she is the one we are all asking about.

To us, Aimara is this deeply complex, powerful, silly, cultured, brilliant woman. That is who she is, and who she will always be.

To my son, she will always be Ta’ Mara, his best friend.

None of us know what the days ahead will bring. What I do know is that Aimara has spent her life making sure people feel seen, loved, and cared for. Right now, we want her and her family to feel that same love surrounding them.

These spaces were made for us, and this exhibit proves it.

Tres Voces, Un Corazón features the work of a Chicano family of artists here in Boulder, and walking through it, I saw mi mami, mi papi, my abuelos, my siblings - our whole community reflected back at us.

Meet Sylvia Montero, Tony Ortega, and Cipriano Ortega (from left to right), the artists behind this exhibit! A mother, father, and their son. Three artists. One family. One home. Un Corazón. Their work is rooted in the Chicano movement, cultural memory, and familia, and it’s all on display at @bmoca, in Boulder, for you to experience.

This is our story on those walls.

This piece by Tony Ortega spoke to me. Our people. Our march. Our history, hanging on the wall of a contemporary art museum. This is what it looks like when art holds our community’s truth with dignity and power. This one hit close to home.
