Shanghai — Da Dong & Siji Minfu are both standout & super popular options when it comes to Peking duck in Shanghai. While both are duck-centric & highly regarded, they both take very different approaches (pricing, atmosphere, overall experience). If you’re unsure which one suits you better, here’s a side-by-side comparison. 🦆🥢

The review is based on my visit at:

Saigon — It always amazes me how many good matcha spots Saigon has to offer. From places where you can choose between different ceremonial-grade matcha powders to creative matcha drinks like Baileys Matcha, Matcha Beer and Corn Matcha Latte, there’s always something new to try.

Many places also open until late, which is perfect for an evening matcha run (yes, I do drink my matcha in the evening despite the caffeine 😌).

Here is a list of some of my favorite spots to get your matcha fix in Saigon (part 1). Some of these places have more than one location, but I’ve only included the addresses of the ones I’ve personally visited.

🏷️ Save this guide for your next matcha date in Saigon!

🍵 KOCHA MATCHA SPOT

I’ve been a fan of Kocha for a few years now. They have multiple locations, but I usually visit the one on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai. The beautiful, Japanese-inspired space and their good selection of matcha and hojicha drinks make it a lovely place to stop by for a cup of matcha.

What I particularly like about Kocha is that they also offer a good selection of matcha powders to choose from, with descriptions of each one’s flavour profile, so you can pick the matcha that best suits your taste.

My usual order is their Iced Matcha Latte (My favorite is Shikibu no Mukashi from Yamamasa Koyamaen) or Baileys Matcha, which has a lovely minty flavour. Their Baileys Hojicha Latte is another personal favourite!

📍 382 Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai, Bàn Cờ

🍵 ĐÂU ĐÓ MATCHA

A small and cozy matcha spot that feels like a quiet little escape from the energy of Saigon. Their drinks are beautifully presented, and the miniature moss landscape on the table was such a beautiful detail, almost like a tiny forest accompanying your cup of matcha.

We had the Piña Colada Matcha and an Iced Matcha Latte, for which I chose the Jukou no Shiro from Saijoen. Not sure if this is a regular option or if their matcha selection rotates, but I really enjoyed it. It had a gentle umami, subtle sweetness and a silky finish that lingered softly on the palate.

They also have other creative options such as Matcha Yuzu, Earl Grey Matcha, Ube Matcha, etc. The owner was also very kind and friendly. taken in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam by @rosefoodtalks

Tokyo — Kicking off the Tokyo series with one of the best meals I had during my entire trip. Gyukatsu Motomura was high on my list & I finally got to see why it’s so popular.

They specialize in just one thing which is the gyukatsu—beef cutlet that’s flash-fried to create a crisp exterior & a beautifully rare interior. The set includes barley rice, miso soup, cabbage salad & some sides. You also get your own mini stone plate to finish grilling the meat to your liking.

If you aim for medium-rare, grill each side for 10-15s, but since the cut is so well-marbled, 20s on each side really brought out that melt-in-the-mouth goodness. The texture was just incredible with the beef being so juicy & flavorful. 🥩🔥

I waited for 45 minutes in total & it’s absolutely worth every second. On a side note, also a special shoutout to their warabi mochi which was heavenly. Really can’t wait to return to Tokyo just to have this meal again.

Saigon — Across all the countries I’ve visited, this was hands down the most impressive fine dining meal I’ve ever had. CoCo Dining was recently awarded its first Michelin star in 2025 & I got to experience their latest tasting menu ‘Lữ Hành’. 🚂🛤️

From the start, you receive your ‘ticket’ to follow Chef Vương on a journey across Vietnam, from north to south. Each stop highlights an ingredient which is tied to a childhood story or a nostalgic dish from his past.

The 11-course menu is deeply rooted in Vietnamese culture, yet elevated with creativity & refinement. It highlights the beauty & diversity of famous local ingredients in ways that felt both familiar & surprising.

Some of the standouts:
▫️Trà Quế herbs, basil sorbet, tomato & apple sauce: A bright, palate-awakening dish with a herbal vibrancy that immediately grounds you in central Vietnam. It was refreshing yet complex at the same time. 🍃

▫️Hokkaido scallop with nem nướng foam & horseradish: One of the most original pairings I’ve tasted. Nem nướng is usually bold & meaty, but here it was lightened into a foam over sweet scallops. Familiar yet creative & unexpected!

▫️Family Feast: With many elements, this course felt like a loving tribute to the warmth & abundance of a home-cooked Vietnamese meal. Wagyu striploin was tender, juicy & full of flavor. The tart kho quẹt with leafy greens & a salty-sweet kho quẹt sauce was also an interesting attribute. Other components of the course were all thoughtfully composed & harmoniously plated. 🍽🌾

The service was exceptional, warm & incredibly attentive to detail. It’s rare to leave a fine dining experience feeling moved, but Coco Dining truly surpassed every expectation. Can’t wait to return & see where the next menu takes us!

Amsterdam — Recently revisited Gifu after quite a long time, my first visit was actually around the time they first opened.

When I think of a more upscale ramen concept in Amsterdam, Fuku and Gifu are two places that come to mind. Both go beyond ramen, offering a selection of well-curated izakaya-style dishes alongside their noodle bowls.

The interior is aesthetic and thoughtfully designed, with separate dining areas and an open kitchen where you can watch the chefs at work. Bonus points for the lighting at the bar, which was designed in a way that puts the food in the spotlight and makes every dish look great in photos. Small detail but something I always rate highly when visiting restaurants.

Swipe through for a closer look at what we had!

My personal highlight was the Enoki Tofu. It surprised us with its savoury, umami-rich flavour profile while still feeling clean and refreshing.

For ramen, I’d recommend the Wagyu & Duck. Having tried it when Gifu first opened, it was nice to see how the recipe has evolved, bringing more depth and complexity to the bowl.

Overall, a lovely address for a nice dinner out in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam — I first visited Sushi Fanatics back in 2023 and honestly, it wasn’t particularly memorable. So I never really thought about coming back until recently when I decided to give it another try. And I’m glad I did because the sushi really impressed me this time. I’ve already been back a couple more times since.

These photos are from two different visits, we usually just order a selection of nigiri to share. My favourites are the Chutoro, Otoro and Aburi Hotate, but the one you absolutely shouldn’t miss is the Unagi Flambé Deluxe.

There are two versions of the Unagi Flambé Nigiri, and you should definitely go for the Deluxe. The eel cut is huge, incredibly tender and packed with flavour. Their Crazy Tuna Roll is also worth ordering, a mix of different tuna cuts with scallion and sesame.

The restaurant itself is tucked away in a quiet neighbourhood and is quite small, so it can fill up quickly. These days, whenever I’m craving proper sushi, Sushi Fanatics is usually one of the first places that comes to mind.

I’m also a fan of their other restaurants, Ikkoku and Shigure, so clearly I have a bit of a soft spot for this group.

Saigon — I’ve been to Pizza 4P’s more times than I can count, so writing a review of the restaurant itself feels a little unnecessary. It’s also such a classic spot among locals and tourists, but after visiting the Bến Thành branch, I think deserves its own mention.

Located right next to Bến Thành Market, this Pizza 4P’s is set inside a spacious former French villa, the restaurant deliberately preserved elements of the building, including its nostalgic architectural details, balcony and traditional French jalousie windows. There are several seating areas and an open balcony area, so depending on where you sit, the experience changes quite a bit.

For anyone unfamiliar with Pizza 4P’s, their concept is rooted in Italian cuisine but brings in Japanese influences using local ingredients. I’ve tried many dishes at 4P’s but the Crab Tomato Cream Spaghetti is probably the dish I order most consistently. It’s creamy but still bright from the tomato, with sweet crab flavour coming through.

Then I always go for a half-and-half pizza with my half almost always being the Seafood Spicy Tomato Sauce. Another underated item is their Italian Meatball Tomato Soup, comforting, rich and finished with mascarpone for extra creaminess.

Pizza 4P’s might be one of the most familiar restaurant names in Saigon. But if you haven’t been to the Bến Thành branch, this one is definitely worth checking out!

Saigon — Had the pleasure of being invited by the Unagi Yosakura team last week to experience their signature Hitsumabushi, a regional specialty from Nagoya.

Their Hitsumabushi features premium Japanese unagi grilled in traditional kabayaki style, then glazed with a signature sweet-savory tare sauce and served over rice. We also tried their most premium item on the menu (Wagyu Hitsumabushi), which is an upgraded version from the original one, combining unagi with richly marbled Wagyu, egg yolk, and ikura. Honestly, one of the best unagi don I’ve had in a long time! (swipe for the details)

What makes hitsumabushi particularly special is the way the experience evolves throughout the meal. You begin by tasting it plain to fully appreciate the quality of the eel, then add condiments like scallions, nori, and wasabi for a brighter and more refreshing flavor profile. The final stage is served ochazuke-style, with hot dashi poured over the rice, transforming the dish into something lighter, soothing, and deeply comforting!

I initially questioned the pricing, but after experiencing the quality of the ingredients, technique, and overall execution, it felt entirely justified.

Unagi Yosakura originates from Japan, where it now operates eight locations, alongside two branches in Vietnam. Despite being located on busy Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street, the space feels elegant, modern, and quietly refined.

If you enjoy unagi or are curious about experiencing Hitsumabushi properly, this is definitely a spot worth trying in Saigon.

Saigon — My honest review about CieL Dining, one of the newer fine dining restaurants that has been widely discussed among culinary enthusiasts. Opened in late 2024, it earned one Michelin star within its first year and has maintained it into its second year. The restaurant’s concept blends modern French cuisine with Vietnamese influences, served in an open-kitchen setting.

Swipe for more details about the courses. But overall some of the standout dishes include:
- Mushroom Mille-Feuille (Amuse Bouche)
- Drunken Chicken
- Zucchini Blossoms with Cuttlefish
- Thin Noodles with Chives and Joselito broth.

Pacing was well handled at the beginning, but slowed noticeably towards the end, with longer waiting times between courses. The dessert courses were also the weakest part of the menu, with none of them leaving a strong impression compared to the savoury dishes.

Overall, CieL delivers a refined and technically accomplished dining experience, with several standout dishes that showcase both precision and creativity. While there are a few areas for refinement, particularly towards the end of the menu, it remains a compelling addition to Saigon’s fine dining scene.
