[Hebrew Follows] I am happy to announce a publication delayed by 43 years: an illustrated Hebrew edition of "Transformations:" Anne Sexton’s Macabre, funny and disturbing renditions of the Brother Grimm fairy tales. I was twenty years old when I translated and illustrated this book, which will be launched at the opening of my exhibition "Hang Them All!" @mishkan_museum_of_art Friday. October 23rd. The book’s paintings will be publicly shown for the first time, along with a present-day return to the fairy tales.
It is a weird, awkward feeling to expose such paintings. One of the things that too me by surprise in this renewed encounter with a young, very different artist, is how complex and defiant are the text-image stance: very few of the images illustrate directly narrative events. I will share more of these images soon. Shown here: the book’s front cover, and four paintings illsurating Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty), paying homage to Goya’s "The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters."
My thanks go out to @gnat_micropress, to @hadarreuven who designed the book, to Daniel oz, the editor, to @avilubin the exhibition’s curator, and to @bethcitron who was helpful in securing the translation rights.

My exhibition "Hang Them All!" opening October 23 @mishkan_museum_of_art will feature the first full display of "The Gaza War Tattoos." "Mosquito Procedure," shown here, is the informal name given by IDF units to the practice of using Palestinian civilians as human shields. An investigative report by the New York Times (October 14, 2024) included testimonies of both Israelis and Palestinians and described in detail what is clearly a war crime according to both international and Israeli law Further, soldiers designated the term "Wasp" (as opposed to "mosquito") to a Palestinian brought for this purpose from the occupied territories to Gaza. The NYT exposé was followed another, in the independent online news site @ha_makom (February 15, 2025), which exposed a case of an 80 year old Palestinian who was coerced to serve in this manner for six hours with a belt of explosives hung around his neck. That person and his wife, whose house was demolished, were then told to leave the place. Minutes later they were shot dead by another unit. A recent article on the same site (by Revital Hovel, September 15, 2026) exposed the extreme sadism and war crimes of the commander who imposed the Mosquito procedure in that incident. "The Gaza War Tattoos" was realized in two chapters, the first (2024), was commissioned by curators @ekaterinadegot and David Riff for the exhibition "Horror Patriae" @steirischerherbst The second chapter (2025) to which these two belong, included real tattoos, and was commissioned for the exhibition "Global Fascism" @hkw_berlin curated by @cosmincostinas and hemmed by @bonaventurendikung. The images shared here show the works, preparatory gouaches, an HKW installation show, and the photos waiting to be hung on the floor of "Mishkan." Initial idea-sketch for the mural "Hang Them All!" + sketches for the frog and Puss in Boots. In the fourth image, with @orna_ceramics_food and @yotamgardi working on the mural, the Puss is between the ladders, and below the right ladder, a starry Memento Mori I improvised on the spot (close up in the last image). Working @mishkan_museum_of_art on “Hang Them All!,” one of three rooms in this exhibition, and I could not ask for better assistants than @gadeeers, @mor.human.art , @yotamgardi, and a supporting guest appearance by @orna_ceramics_food. Intense work but I believe we managed. The whole thing is curated by @avilubin. More on the other rooms later on. This 1986 TV excerpt is the only video documentation of my dabbling in music in me early 20s, just the first lines of my setting to music of Anne’s Sexton’s poem Angel of Hope and Calendars. The singer is @ornakatz1, and yes, that’s me on the piano and attempting to sing. This was one of four angel poems translated to Hebrew by Sabina Messeg published when I was in high school, an encounter that made me fall in love with the poet. I did not only compose all four poems but also translated and illustrated Sexton’s Transformations (1971), her brilliant, dark and funny renditions of the Brothers Grimm Fairy tales. These are the lines sung here in the original English:

Angel of hope and calendars, do you know despair?
That hole I crawl into with a box of Kleenex,
that hole where the fire woman is tied to her chair,
that hole where leather men are wringing their necks,
where the sea has turned into a pond of urine.

This televised moment jumped back to my memory as this 43 years later the book, artworks included, is about to be published by @mishkan_museum_of_art and Gnat). The TV program was a documentary following three young artists (produced the public, and then only, Channel), directed by Esther Dar and Nili Neumann. By the time it was aired I was already in NYC, not planning to ever come back. It is an embarrassing watching experience for me if there ever was one, but remains, unfortunately, the only recording I have of my music. One day in the early 90s I stupidly decided cassettes were obsolete and dumped the few hundreds I had, only to realize soon after that one of them was of my own music. #annesexton #roeerosen by @rosenroee

The last of the 3 old compilations I am posting here, “Lower Educations,” features songs performed by children (even as they occasionally tackle uncomfortable issues, from LSD trips to alienation and racism). This one was actually created for an exhibition on the theme of gifts, and was sent, along with jewel-box artwork, to anyone who wished for it. It is the least funny of the three CDs, but perhaps the most beautiful, and along with some relatively famous performers such as Lena Zavaroni, has a hefty share of obscurities. The 2nd image offers the full track list. I was wavering whether to use as a background song the only “fake” child here: the amazing Robert Wyatt performing as both the father and the child on the last track… but I had to go with what for me is one of the most beautiful songs ever: Elizabeth Cotten’s “Shake Sugaree,” sung in 1967 by her then 12 years old great-grandaughter, Brenda Evans. by @rosenroee

The second of the 3 compilations I’m posting here, “Spermalicious!!!” Was created for one person, @doronrabina (“in return for sexual favors,” explains the cover, but I am no longer sure what these were). The gamut runs from tendencies qualified as perversions to reflections on genitalia to some more particular situations (in the background song Ann Magnuson of Bongwater uses the Met’s collection as porn). People commented that I should recreate the collection as a Spotify playlist… that’s a no go, but I am providing the track list below; enjoy! 1. ECC – Sex Reeducation
  2. Alvaro – I eat my own sperm
  3. Bongwater – Obscene and Pornographic Art
  4. Magali Noél (Boris Vian) - Fais Moi Mal, Johnny
  5. King Missile – Margaret’s eyes
  6. The Frogs – Golden Showers
  7. Monty Python – Vagina Song
  8. GHP – Pussy (Jeannie Vrs Khia)
 9. Porest – Nazi Boys
  10. Iggy Pop – Nazi Girlfriend
  11. Roxy Music – In Every Dream home a Heartache
  12. Cibo Matto – Artichoke
  13. Sparks – Perfume
  14. Petra Haden – Odorono
  15. The Who – Tattoo
  16. King Missile – Detachable Penis
  17. Cody Chesnutt – The Seed
  18. The Fibonaccis – I Had It With Girls
  19. The Frogs – I’m Back to Girls
  20. Sebadoh – Three Times a Day
  21. White Noise – My Game of Loving
  22. Dudley Moore and Peter Cook – Bedazzled
  23. Felix Kubin - Hello
  24. Helen Humes – Million Dollar Secret

I’m returning to a short period in which I pursued the genre of themed, hand-designed CD compilations. Here’s the first of 3, made as a gift for all the people who appeared as audience in my short film “Hilarious,” a dysfunctional stand-up starring @hanifurstenberg and featuring, as the cover promised, “feel-good for the wrong reasons songs.” The program included Sparks, Daniel Johnston, Ivor Cutler + songs about Nixon, Hitler, aborted children, tumors… hilarious one and all, including “I’m sorry” by Inflatable Boy Clams, playing in the background. by @rosenroee
