Come get your flowers, @RosesGabor 🌹One of the UK’s most mercurial artists, West London native Roses Gabor has maintained a constant state of flux almost her entire career. As a collaborator, she’s as adventurous as they come, contributing show-stealing vocals to iconic tracks from underground mavericks like Shy FX and Machinedrum, and her breathy, soulful vocals on SBTRKT’s “Pharaohs” and the Gorillaz track “Dare” are without question the keystones of both tracks, but in entirely different ways.R&B, Roses once told CLASH, is definitely a part of her sound—but there’s so much more to her than that. Her music stands alone for its fantastical lyrics, ethereal tone, and she possesses one of the most versatile voices around. And then there are the productions, also wildly different from one track to the next as she pulls from electronic music, dancehall, soul, gospel and countless other sounds that have shaped her over the years.That fearlessness has always been there too, from her debut solo single in 2012, “Stars”—with its hypnotising, ahead-of-their-time vocal chops and off-kilter sensibility—to her 2019 debut album, ‘Fantasy & Facts’, a luscious masterwork informed by classic soul, faith-led music and her love of club bass, with contributions from the likes of Toddla T, Sampha, Team Salut, The Stereotypes, Greg Wells and Fred Ball. More recently, this year’s run of singles—namely “Rainbows In Springtime” and “Peaces”—have seen her delve into a more futuristic sound splashed with a kind of cosmic headiness. Growing up in the cultural melting pot of West LDN with Grenadian-Dominican heritage opened Roses Gabor up to an almost limitless supply of inspiration from all over the world. But what makes her special is what she’s done with it: never looking back and relentlessly pursuing the next new sound. I love making a song from nothing to realising and feeling excited about something really good happening. I love “healthy” 🙄crunchy things. I love water no matter what they say about H30 being better. I LOVE vegetables. I love fruits. I love being a good daughter, sister, friend, auntie (I’m not always). I love those that know I do. I love great design. I love watching/seeing my parents together. I love good drivers. I love stillness. I love gold. I love sky. I love cleanliness. I love the babies. I love the elders. I love fun. I love laughing. I love being aware of what I’m feeling (even if it hurts sometimes) I love prancing on massive stages. Freedom, I guess I love being an anomaly… by default. Images from last night at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with @gorillaz & @shaunryderx 🩵I had 2 bits of advice before the show … One piece was from D (Damon) given to him by the late great Bobby Womack … the other was from Richard Russell that the late great Gil Scott Heron gave him. 😮‍💨 Make of that what you will… I’m still processing the last few days so I’ll be back with a proper update but in the interim… Thank you to the crew, band, catering, tour management, assistants. You guys are the actual best. Everyone that came to Tottenham and SUNG THEIR HEARTS AAAAAT to Dare. I feel like you had THE BEST time no?! Thank you D & J for having me.
