Classic Kitchen Series — Part 2
Here’s the whole kitchen, all together in one view.

Step back and look at the wall symmetry first. The range wall is built to be symmetrical. We have the hood in the center, windows flanking it, custom cabinetry balancing the wall. I always think that symmetry matters in design because it gives your eye a place to rest. It helps a room feel settled, not busy. We used the back wall to add our touch of symmetry to anchor this backdrop.

The diamond muntin bars were a deliberate choice. We loved how the pattern changes the light as it enters the room, and how it gives this room its signature mark, without shouting. It’s effortless, natural, and part of the backdrop.

The most underrated detail is the feel of a room that comes from the space you have to walk around. It’s a balance of cabinetry to walking space and the scale of the room. We love having over 42” for walking clearance and more for working areas or high traffic spaces. Here we have 49” on the right of the island, 44” at the range side, and 42” at the left of the island. Those clearances were carefully planned for both appearance and usability.

That’s what I aimed for in this kitchen design. It is warm, thought through, and not busy. There are no details trying to steal the show. A beautiful room that is still down to earth allows for a kitchen that you can live in and work in comfortably.

Part 3 is a Reel with a walk through. I’ll show you how those clearances actually feel to walk through. It will also include more quiet details in this kitchen I haven’t shared yet.

Classic Kitchen Series — Part 1
Look closer at this kitchen design. The Calacatta Gold marble gets the attention, but the quiet details are what make this custom kitchen stand out.

I chose warm off-white uppers with the darkest stain I could go with that still allowed the white oak grain to show through. The island reads as furniture, not just more cabinetry. I paired Calacatta Gold with white oak and unlacquered brass. Marble adds in a natural and organic feel, brass keeps it warm, oak is adding character.

We like to add something personal to each room:
The hood is built as custom cabinetry, with a thin aged brass rail. We designed it to disappear into the wall without missing an opportunity to leave its mark. It reads as soft to the eye as the stainless steel Lacanche range. The shelf rail adds back something to still catch your eye.

While the island sits on the floor, the appearance was designed to help it look like furniture. The rounded shelf is off to one side. This long end looks like a shelf with the brass-capped legs. Also, the wood panel that meets the floor is trimmed to give the appearance of table legs. A typical island that may have a toe kick all around or a visible overhang for the bar stools. We enclosed ours to add that special custom touch.

In each room, we try hard to define ways to add personality. In this kitchen, one way we accomplished this was by building parts of it to look like furniture.

This home stood out as warm, inviting, and full of character before a single piece of furniture arrived.

Not because any one room was the showpiece, but because every space had its own personality that told a part of the story.

Every space was designed to feel cohesive, with the same quality throughout. Regardless of the room, whether it is the kitchen, primary bath, pantry, laundry, powder room, mudroom, each was given the same care and attention. Cabinetry adorns each room like furniture. Marble became a part of the architecture. The finishes were chosen to patina and grow more beautiful with everyday life. Nothing in this home was finished like a secondary space.

After going under contract early, the home we designed and built is now complete. We look forward to sharing highlights of our work in the weeks to come.

Grateful to @thorsen_construction for bringing this home to life, to @stofferhomecabinetry and @jeanstofferdesign for your incredibly beautiful cabinetry that gave so many of these rooms their identity, and to @jrichardsonla for designing a beautiful exterior landscape that no one could imagine would be possible.

Thank you @hrlspartners for connecting me with the best clients ever. 💙

Unexpected moments in unexpected rooms. Calacatta Viola marble floors paired with a delicate block print wallcovering — something substantial met with something light. And that arched marble backsplash?Architectural in shape, practical in purpose — designed to protect the wallcovering while becoming the focal point of the room. Swipe through and take a look at this room.
Which detail surprised you most? 👉

Cream inset cabinetry, unlacquered brass hardware, and Calacatta Viola picking up on the dark colors in the marble floors. Every finish chosen with the same intention as every other room in this home.

Two washers. Two dryers. A smaller footprint doesn’t have to mean less function — it means designing smarter. We maximized every inch of this room so it works as hard as it looks good.

The arched backsplash is custom cut from the same marble as the countertop — architectural in shape, practical in purpose. Designed to protect the block print wallcovering while becoming the focal point of the room.

A smaller footprint designed to have it all. Full length folding counter. Built-in hamper stations. Floor to ceiling storage cabinetry. Drawers throughout. A utility sink. And still room to move. Small doesn’t mean less — it means every inch has a purpose.

Unlacquered brass hardware throughout. It will patina over time, developing character the longer it’s used — which felt right for a room built around everyday life.

Adding a deep, all-purpose closet with shelves for hampers, supplies, and linens adds another full level of space utilization that covers any potential additional need that may arise. by @rosewoodnb

A foyer and it’s adjacent spaces set the tone for everything that follows. We paid close attention to the details in this entry.

Swipe to learn about the 5 things that turned this functional space into a first impression. Which one stands out to you? 👉 The last one is my favorite!

#customlighting #parquet #luxuryhomes #newconstruction #customhomes

1. The marble fireplace. Hand carved from a single block of marble, this was never meant to be just a fireplace in the next room — it was meant to be the first hint of what’s ahead. The foyer sits between two rooms, and we invested in pieces that reward the people who look closer. The carved marble surround and hearth is the architectural statement that makes you want to keep exploring. The adjacent study room also has a draw that we will share in a later post!

2. The lighting. Every fixture in this foyer was handcrafted — brass and bronze, hand-blown glass, glass mosaic, natural alabaster. But the real decision was choosing shapes and textures that echoed everything else in the space: the arched door, the curved handrail, the warmth of the white oak. We wanted these pieces to also reflect how we approached the lighting in entire home - special and thoughtful fixtures that work together room to room. Nothing was selected in isolation.

3. The parquet floor. White oak, custom stained to match the surrounding floors seamlessly. We designed the pattern around an odd number of full squares across the width, and arranged them so the squares appear to interact — almost woven together. A small obsession that makes the whole thing feel intentional and balanced without anyone knowing exactly why.

4. The window. At two and a half stories, it was one of the first decisions we made for this foyer. The scale alone makes the space feel elevated, and it floods the entry with natural light — but the view of the double cul de sac as you climb the stairs is the unexpected addition that makes it truly special.

5. The curved handrail. This was never just about aesthetics. We designed it so your hand never has to leave the rail from the top floor to the basement — an by @rosewoodnb

We designed every detail of this foyer to earn that moment — the one that happens in the first 10 seconds.
Parquet floors. Custom handcrafted lighting. A curved continuous handrail. A two and a half story window. Custom stained white oak doors. A marble fireplace. A moody study room with a custom built in.

Full breakdown in our next post.

This one’s going to be special! 🏡 If you’re new here, hit follow so you don’t miss any step of the design and build process for this new luxury home in McLean, VA.

I am taking a slightly different approach this time!

As I assembled the design team, I was eager to find an architect and design collaborator who truly understands both my brand and my vision — someone who not only brings polished execution, but also a sharp, instinctive eye for form, function and the architectural details needed to differentiate our home. To improve our process and results, I am adding additional interior details and elevations that scope, as well. After seeing our vision pulled together in this Schematic Design, it’s safe to say @mortarandthatch is a winner. 🏆

I couldn’t have done this without you and @jrichardsonla 🌿

Building a home is all about the little details, and we can’t wait to share them as we get started. Right now we’re refining the elevations and floor plans while the landscape design takes shape. Let us know what you think of this at first glance!
