I’m trying to remember summer as the smell of pumpkin spiced lattes begins to creep in and the spooky queers arise from their emo slumber.

Green Man… I couldn’t tell you much, apart from getting to be with one of my closest and oldest friends, Cyd. Her and I have known each other our whole lives. Cyd was also a fellow weird kid, and although we were brought together by our parents being friends (since they were in their twenties), we weren’t the kind of kids to make friends for the sake of it.

We’ve always adored each other. I think, more than most people, Cyd knows me to the core of my being, and her, I.

When someone’s known you that long, there’s no hiding, or reinventing, or running away when you feel shame around your hurt or dark parts; you just sit in it with them. You don’t need to explain.

Being seen and understood by someone is a rare privilege that should be treasured and held close.

DATING ADVICE🚨
My friend’s 3 rules for keeping things casual without catching feelings… or accidentally becoming a fuckboy.

3 / 4 rules to tell if someone is comfortable with casual or not…

Number 1: You can’t make plans more than 24 hours in advance unless it is purely to hook up. Making a plan more than 24 hours in advance in order to do something together is called a date. Now you’re dating the person you said you only wanted casual with. Mixed messages much?

Number 2: You are not allowed to have breakfast.
Plans more than 24 hours in advance and breakfast in bed with them… you are sending them mixed signals and that makes you a dick.

Number 3: You’re not allowed to see each other on special occasions… Christmas, Valentine’s, Halloween. They can never be your plus one.

Extra rule number 4: You absolutely cannot talk about kids or marriage.

A fling is different to casual. Rules do not apply.

A fling you can have breakfast with, make plans with and talk about whatever you like, but the second you think you might see each other again it’s not a fling. It has to then turn back into casual rules. taken in Brighton and Hove by @rosie.devine

This weekend, the realisation that I’m no longer someone’s person hit me…

Friday night, solo on my way home from a party, I had a weird little existential moment:
No one knows where I am. No one is asking me to share my location. No one is texting “home safe?”

I’m staying at a friend’s, who had said they were having a quiet night in with a couple of other friends.
So at 3am, I tiptoed into the house.
Removed my makeup. Abandoned my clothes on the bathroom floor. Brushed my teeth. Put my retainer in.
Then crept towards the bedroom…
He wasn’t there.

I call. No answer.
Eventually, a text arrives explaining he’s gone out-out, but will be home soon.
I tuck myself into bed and fall asleep.

Next morn, I get up for work, go about my morning rituals as quietly as possible and see if he’d like a coffee.
He’s not there!
On further investigation, I discover he’s actually still at the afters and probably deep in the sesh pit.

After work, I get back to his and he’s changing for the next event.
I have a birthday party to go to, but remind him that we’re hosting friends the next day for Disney Day, so perhaps we should exhibit some restraint.

Cut to 2:20am Saturday…
Him: “Just on way home. ETA 2:41.”
Me, sheepishly: “I’m on my way to a forest rave…”

The moral of the story is: party gremlins don’t belong to anyone.
We collectively look out for each other.
Sometimes the shoe of responsibility is on my foot.
Sometimes I’m shoeless and foot-free.
And occasionally my grubby trainer is wedged in a tree branch while I’m surrounded by other nature-dwelling queers.

Sunday comes in with very little sleep and the whiff of woodland still on my skin, ready to host Disney Day.
It was a gloriously wholesome affair!
With the highlight being me and Sonia feeding Peter roast chicken with our feet.

I may not have made it home from Disney Day.
Instead, I rolled straight to brunch with friends and into date 2 with Fairy Liquid Lover.

I didn’t share my location to the group chat.
But I did assure them: FLL has soap.

I may no longer be someone’s person.
But boy am I everyone’s problem.
