Stayed in CA for almost the entire month! A few things that stood out:

šŸŽµ Went to my first boy band concert and saw BTS with @kwinny! I definitely fan girled real hard. The show was epic and we thoroughly enjoyed making freebies to hand out to fans.

šŸŽ‚ Celebrated my nephew’s (Leo), sister’s (Sam) and brother’s (Khong) birthday this month. Hosted a pool party for Leo’s friends and did a pottery workshop for Sam. Doing pottery is fun, but not easy! I recommend everyone to try a beginner workshop at least once. I can see why people get deep into it.

šŸ–¼ļø Speaking of family, the California-based siblings got together for a museum day at Broad museum. We even scored free admission to the Yoko Ono exhibit. Enjoyed a meal at KazuNori, known as the ā€œoriginal hand roll barā€ in DTLA.

šŸ“± Aside from BTS, the other reason why I was in town was to do social media coverage for a client’s gala at Paramount Studios. It was great to meet colleagues in person who I’ve never met or haven’t seen in such a long time. Excitingly, my client surpassed their fundraising goal by $400,000 more than expected. (Not pictured)

šŸŽ¤ I missed my home, especially having my own designated space and being able to live out my specific routine. I really let go of all my habits, I barely participated in my vocal practice throughout the month. But, there was one night when I was practicing and learned some new things about connecting to my voice and discovering my unique style. šŸ‘€

🧔 Grateful for Kwin who hosted me the whole month. She’s trying real hard to convince me to come back again for all of December. šŸ˜‚ by @rosiechuong

had an intuitive nudge to practice, play with, explore and record this song, ā€œBreathe On Meā€ by Britney Spears. It’s actually one of my top favorite Britney songs.

I love it because it’s sensual. And I think that’s a clue for me in discovering my unique style of singing.

Also, I’m learning how to use this mic for recording in windy conditions. Unfortunately, it kept cutting out when I sang louder/higher in the chorus which is why I kept moving the mic away/close to my body.

After the second time traveling to New York, I’ve concluded that I couldn’t last more than a week given how fast paced it is! On this short, spontaneous trip, I wanted to focus on three things:

FOOD
I specifically wanted to visit a couple of Khmer-owned places. Had dinner at Bong NYC and grabbed drinks at Artara Coffee. Always love to support my fellow Cambodians. There were a couple of other restaurants I wish I could’ve gone to, but next time! My favorite dish was a take on ceviche and the liquid used the essence of prahok, the most quintessential Cambodian ingredient. It was HEAVENLY.

FASHION
Wanted to do some shopping at vintage/thrift/consignment shops while I was in town. I came home with four items, one of which people have been saying look ā€œethereal!ā€ (One of my style words) The most adventurous thing I did in this arena was go to someone’s apartment to see their vintage showroom.

BROOKLYN
Dedicated one specific day to this borough and I did all the things here. Shopping, great food, nature and art! I was able to visit both Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the museum together. The museum happened to exhibit the collection of fashion designer, Iris van Herpen. I highly recommend seeing the exhibit as it explores the intersection of textural technology, nature-based sculptures and the environment.

The bonus was that I captured many photos to use in my flower art! by @rosiechuong

I had an epiphany while recording the other weekend. On the first day (Saturday), I was so focused on trying to make songs fit within one style of singing. When I listened to the footage, I felt it was decent enough, but could tell that SOMETHING WAS MISSING. It sounded as though my voice was restricted and restrained. It was missing soul.

I then had a MINI PANIC Saturday night wondering if I’m not in touch with my emotions. (No really, I went through this LOL)

Early Sunday morning, I researched emotionally connecting to music/songs to figure out what was missing. I found good tips, but nothing quite landed for me.

Did my vocal warmups and practiced the song selection in my car. Then it dawned on me that the reason why the recordings felt off was because I was trying to be a GOOD GIRL.

I was using the part of my voice that feels the safest. The most palatable. The part of my voice that would be least judged. And the compromise for this is my singing was devoid of passion.

When I made the second set of recordings, I told myself I needed to let go a little more. I had to remind myself that it’s ok if I sounded all over the place. Better to be full of flaws while being full of feelings. I needed to sing the songs in the way that felt most intuitive for me, and not try to fit it into a box.

The result? I could instantaneously feel and hear that my voice was freer and more dynamic. What’s even more validating is that on the first day, I got so many compliments on how I LOOKED...

On the second day, I got compliments on how I SOUNDED!

That was a clue that other people could hear the difference as well.

August felt like a portal, honestly. Some highlights from this month:

Booked a spontaneous trip to New York. My second time here and this time I was by myself. I’ll do a trip recap later this week!

I started incorporating vocal warmups and singing into my creative practice. Long story short, I’ve been doing this at parks because I can’t do it at home. At first, it was extremely uncomfortable, but I’m now getting used to giving myself the permission to take up space and be loud in public.

My word of the year is ā€œromanticā€ and suddenly, I’m coming across red dresses that I absolutely love! You may see me wear more red this fall and winter.

Saw some beautiful rainbows this month, including a double rainbow!

I randomly saw a watercoloring reel that felt like ASMR for me and within 24 hours, I bought the tools I needed to do the same at home. It’s incredibly meditative and soothing. The key here is that it’s a specific type of paint material I’m using. I’ve played with watercolor pencils before and was unimpressed. But apparently, it’s the inks that really do something to me. by @rosiechuong

People are drawn to you because your presence wakes up a part of them that feels more alive, expanded and aware of what is possible. And that’s so beautiful.

A month ago, I put this desire out into the universe: to follow little Rosie’s singing passion and let it lead me. In less than 30 days, I’ve uncovered a lot of heavy beliefs I’ve carried all along.

ā€œI’m not good enough.ā€
ā€œI don’t sound like my peers, so that must mean something’s wrong with me.ā€
ā€œPeople that look like me aren’t famous musicians, so I’m not allowed to exist in this space.ā€
ā€œThis silly passion isn’t realistic and doesn’t mean anything.ā€

And, wow. So much has changed in the music industry, in society and in my worldview and beliefs in the last 20 years. I know now that all these messages are untrue.

I may be un-shy when it comes to public speaking, presenting, yapping and posting selfies, but singing hits a nerve I never realized was there.

Singing is one of the rawest forms of vulnerability. Most people can’t hide behind the sound that comes out of their mouths. Against every version of me I’ve ever held, my voice is the one I can’t ā€œmake upā€ or alter. And that is why it’s been safer to hide it.

I could’ve (and kind of wanted to) deleted every single recording. But as of today, it’s time to walk the walk. Can’t get better if I’m not practicing and closed to feedback. This is my baseline and I’m excited to see how far I’ll go from here.

Cheers to getting a little braver by the day. 🧔

PS - Sorry for the audio quality! I’m not as savvy with sound editing and wanted to test how it would sound without a mic. Editing tips are always appreciated!
