In the shadow of the superpower next door, Taiwan stands at the edge of a brewing storm. As tensions mount, local musicians are amplifying calls for independence, national identity, and resistance to both internal and external authoritarianism. But with the lucrative allure of the Chinese mainland's fanbase swaying some artists, a sharp divide has emerged in the music scene. Can the artists calling for an independent Taiwan get their voices heard above the clamour?

This is the finale of a six-part series, Gen Taiwan, I had the privilege to produce and pen for Vice News. And my last… for now! It's the culmination of a year exploring subjects ranging from protests against fascism, aging populations, Taoism, microchips, propaganda, healthcare, abuse, to the intricacies of love and war.

Heavily armed gangs in South Africa, known as zama zamas, are occupying abandoned mines in the search for gold, which eventually gets laundered into the international gold supply. Impoverished artisanal miners are forced to live and work in perilous underground conditions for weeks at a time, under the tyranny of gang leaders who regard their lives as worthless. Our team, consisting of fellow producer Stacey Naggiar and producer/director Nicky Troll, conducted this in-depth investigation into the illicit gold mining industry in South Africa, which is causing an annual loss of over a billion dollars to the country.

Escaping Brazil’s Deadliest Gangs:

In Brazil's deadliest regional capital, a fierce gang war rages for control over the Northwestern Amazon's drug trade. Poverty and coercion trap young men in crime, with only jail or death as escapes.

However, hope emerges with "The 91," ex-gang leaders turned Christian pastors, offering clemency to gang members seeking a new life. Their respected status within the gang community allows them to vouch for those choosing Jesus over crime, providing hundreds a renewed chance at life.

A rare privilege to make this film with directors @maumfilho and @avenerprado

Directing and DOP: Mauricio Monteiro Filho and
Avener Prado
Soundtrack: Gustavo Monteiro
Editing: Mauricio Monteiro Filho and Diego Arvate
Producers: Charlie Rosser and Matt Shea

Colombia’s New Narco Wars -
6 years after a historic peace deal designed to reduce drug linked violence in Colombia, murders are on the rise again. The rainforest border between Colombia and Venezuela is one of the busiest hotspots for drug trafficking in the world - and the most secretive. Under the canopies, a war is raging to control the cocaine corridors, fought between a mushrooming number of drug cartels, right-wing militias, and left-wing guerrilla groups. The indigenous community is getting caught in the crossfire and forced to work in the bloody drug trade as farmers of lucrative crops like coca. Colombia is now one of the most dangerous places in the world to be an indigenous person. I produced this film for @viceworldnews with veteran journalist and filmmaker Rodrigo Vasquez, with editing by Blake Dixon.

The Urban Age - At present, 500 million people in Africa are urban dwellers but that’s set to reach almost 2 billion in the coming decades. Ethiopia is one of the most populous, and youthful, countries in Africa that is moving at great pace from a predominantly rural economy to an urban one. Some stills from a long term project for @londonschoolofeconomics exhibited at the @lsecities conference in Addis Ababa.

The heroin pills sparking deadly turf wars.

A new way of packaging heroin in capsule form has hit Durban, South Africa, upending the market and starting brutal gang wars that the police are struggling to contain. The mechanisation of the process is creating soaring profits for some and terrible rates of addiction for others.

This film is the result of an undercover investigation into the trade with the great @nickytroll & @kierranallen. Check it out on @vicenews. taken in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal by @rossercw

The Battle for Ethiopia (2020)

It’s been a year since I made this film with the maestro, @clive.patterson . Just a month after its release, Ethiopia had descended into a brutal and largely incomprehensible civil war.

But the film finds hope despite the bleakness - I barely believe the events we captured in the finale. It shows that there are still opportunities for reconciliation amongst enemies with the deepest of grievances…

Swipe for some production stills and the clip in question from the final scene.
