Our NYC story made The New York Times! We’re in today’s Renters section, which is all about “who rents in New York, where they live and what they have to put up with.” I absolutely love this 700-square-foot slice of Manhattan that we’ve made our home, a place full of art, quirky decor, cozy spots, and plenty of cat toys for @cleocatracalico.

@shaneculgan and I spent so many hours cleaning, painting, and decorating to prepare for this photoshoot. Inviting millions of Times readers into your home is a bit of a terrifying prospect. Being *perceived* even moreso. This certainly isn’t one of those fancy Architectural Digest tours. We’re the proud owners of plenty of Ikea furniture and many hand-me-down pieces.

We’re also the proud owners of quirky things that make us, *us* — an Elvis tiki mug, a small jungle of plants, Shane’s collection of Hot Wheels, and my Founding Fathers bookends. To me, these photos capture not just things but our connections with so many people we adore — a “Sh*t Rough Drafts” book from @m_torcaso, a @fishseddynyc bowl from @alexweisler, a signed copy of “Tiny Beautiful Things” from @lexibelc, a Medusa candle from @moonlab42, stained glass made by my Dad, vintage vases from my mom, and a picture frame from my late grandmother.

So come on in, the tour is now open.

P.S. Please help me manifest another appearance in The Times — next time a story with my byline!

Some say that it takes 10 years to be officially considered a “New Yorker.” As of this month, five years after we moved in during Hurricane Henri, it seems we’re half-way there. Even though we still live in the exact same apartment, so much has changed in the past five years—a master’s degree, a law degree, a book, new jobs, and even a baby! Every single thing we’ve done here has felt very “against all odds.” In some ways, I never want to leave this city. In some ways, I want to leave tomorrow. For me, I think that’s the dichotomy of living here—yes, as a (gasp!) Appalachian transplant. This city is complex and exhausting; it’s exhilarating and joyful. There’s certainly nowhere else like it in the world, and I’m glad to call it home for now or forever. taken in New York City by @rossilynne

Writing a book is a solitary endeavor, even when you have a co-author. For several years, we spent our days (and nights and weekends) in front of Google Docs, heavily marked-up PDFs, and a long list of fact-checking notes. Somehow, despite all of the hard work, writing doesn’t feel real until there are readers. We finally got to share our book with the world last week in an incredibly fun launch party at @tracebrewing with more than 100 friends, old and new. Thank you to everybody who came to support our work and to toast with us.

Having the party at Trace was so important to us for several reasons. Yes, the brewery made the list of our 100 things. But more than that, Trace’s ethos of building community in Pittsburgh means a lot to us; thank you for letting our book launch be a part of that. 💛 taken in Trace Brewing by @rossilynne

After four years and more than 1,000 stories, it’s time to say peace out to Time Out. In many ways, this job was a dream. I came to New York City to write about arts and culture, and that’s exactly what I got to do every day. I relished the editorial freedom, I enjoyed working with many amazing writers, and I loved promoting weird and wonderful events. I felt pride in how all-encompassing my Things to Do beat was (“everything except for theater and food,” as I often said), and it gave me a chance to cover art, comedy, books, festivals, burlesque, magic, travel, fashion, music, even sports, the list goes on.

On assignment, I walked all of Manhattan, slept atop Rockefeller Center on the solstice, danced with the Rockettes, achieved a bullseye in archery, took a vintage train upstate, saw the New Year’s Eve ball up close, did yoga by the fireside, spent six hours in a subway station (voluntarily), went behind the scenes of the Roosevelt Island tram, and climbed to the top of the Delacorte Clock. I interviewed Bill Nye, Ben Schwartz, Ellie the Elephant, Robin Arzon, Kaskade, Shaina Taub, and several stars from Emily in Paris. I appeared on CBS NY, PIX 11, NY1, and WNYC. I often said, “I can’t believe this is my job.”

Knowing that millions of people from New York and abroad read my work is the privilege of a lifetime—thank you to everyone who ever read even a sentence of mine. For many reasons, however, now is the right time for a change, and I’m thrilled for what’s next. Stay tuned for more! by @rossilynne

It’s official: Shane Culgan, Esq! So proud of you, @shaneculgan, for your hard work, strong ethics, and the wonderful example you set for our daughter.

Also proud of you for being perhaps the first law student ever to complete every word of your assigned readings. 🤓 taken in New York Law School by @rossilynne
