“Avni - Father of a Friend” You post it. I might paint it. This snapshot of an adorable dad appeared in a friend’s Insta story and I grabbed a screen shot. I couldn’t resist the flair of that bucket hat and those magical eyes. Two weeks ago, my company, @integergroup gave me a tenure week off to pursue a passion. I painted some pups, and then got started on this guy. Not gonna lie. This portrait took me into a second week of painting. I was up before dawn at the easel and back at it over lunch. I wiped his face off the canvas TWICE. And painted one eye FIVE TIMES. I kept hearing the voice of @stevegammel in my head, “If portraits were easy, everyone would paint them.” TRUST ME. They. Are. Not. Easy. But I have matured enough as an artist to realize there will always be a moment in the process when you think, “This is pure sh*t.” You just gotta keep painting. Paint until it’s what you set out to capture. That took me years to learn. And years to grow the cajones big enough to actually do it. It’s like stepping into the ring to break a wild horse and not leaving until you’ve done it. When I set my brush down today, I teared up. I’ve painted a lot of crappy art. This one isn’t that. I captured what I wanted to. And it’s executed with ALL that I know, to date, on how to paint. And there’s still so much more to learn. I thought about all the art lessons my parents paid for. And teared up some more. The paintings I’ve stared into so closely that I made museum guards nervous. Then I sat back and savored a five-minute smile. Thanks for indulging my anecdotal bliss if you’ve read this far. Onward to the next portrait and the lessons it will teach me. My favorite quote about mastering art that took me half a decade to embrace goes like this. “The young musician said to the maestro, ‘I can never get the music out of my instrument as beautiful as I hear it in my head.’ The maestro replied, ‘What makes you think that ever changes?’”

#selfie… I learned all about turning gray from my hair stylist yesterday. He said use a purple shampoo. Turns out, I’ve been using my wife’s purple shampoo for a year or so now because…it’s there. In the shower. Evidently it puts color in your hair to combat a yellowing effect. “Like a bad Santa,” I asked? “Yes. Like a bad Santa.” Also, be warned. I’m entering my navy shirt era. Also, ALSO… not the hair dyeing kind so expect me to age artfully. We can’t live forever. But we can purple wash while we’re here. #agemaxxing by @rossweldon

“An Angel in Oil”
ARTIST NOTE: A couple of weeks ago my friend, Andrew Thompson, asked if I would paint a portrait of his mother who just lost her courageous fight with brain cancer. It was to be a gift for his father. How can you say no? But I didn’t say, “yes.” I said I would try and if, when I was finished, Andrew thought it looked like his beloved mother, then we could call it a commission. That took the pressure off, BIG TIME, because portraits scare the crap out of me.
Well, I took a personal day from work to paint today, and, start to finish, it felt like the planets were aligning. I wanted this painting to be so good for him, as if, the better this painting turned out, the more her memory will stay alive in a vibrant, joyful piece of art.
All day, I seriously felt like she was posing for me. I had silent conversations with her, letting her know what a fine young man and father of two she had raised. And I don’t even know her name. I thought of texting Andrew to ask, but something said, just paint what you see. Somehow, not knowing her name or much of her life story, and knowing he didn’t have to buy the painting from me, made it easier for me to just paint.
Well, Andrew, I hope I captured your mom’s beauty and spirit. After signing it, I stepped back to squint and give it the final once over, and I could feel her smiling at me. I am so sorry for you loss. No painting can ever fill the void left behind by the loss of your mother. Congrats on the birth of your second child just as your mother’s battle ended. Isn’t that just like life?

p.s. Many in my inner circle know I make no apologies that I often have to have liquid courage to paint oils. I’ll have you know, this is the first oil I have painted completely sober as a judge. 🤟🏻

THIS is Santa. ARTIST’S NOTE: Perhaps a leaner, less jolly old elf than one might expect. This is a portrait of man whose red-velveted lap our boys sat upon year after year to deliver their list. He was ancient. A shaman of a Santa. Soft-spoken. Weathered. And quietly wise. As if he were a child whisperer. The Santa-lover in me was enchanted by this fellow. I’d never experienced being in the presence of department store Santa so authentically magical. Dare I say sacred. No gesture was swift or unnecessary. No belly laughs emerged from a well of fakery to please the herds of doting parents. And he never mugged for the camera. He wasn’t playing Santa. He just was. We were fortunate that, at his advanced age, his final year on the great leather chair was perfectly synched with the veil of wonder still in the grasp of our second child. Last year, I returned for a glimpse of him, just for the child in me, but an elf in the know informed me OUR Santa had returned to the great North. ❄️ Merry Christmas to you! Especially if you took the time to read this anecdote. Obviously, this particular work means a lot to me. .
