Horned Reverie

Appliqué and hand embroidery on linen, 20.5cm x 28.5cm (8” x 11”).

The entire piece is either fabric or stitch - no paint or other colouring was used.

For those not familiar with D&D, this rather glamorous lady is a tiefling. It was fun to work on a fantasy character - I may do this again sometime!

She’s finished. Hestia is complete, holding the bronze bowl containing her sacred flame. Now, bowl in hand, she can carry the warmth and light of home to wherever it’s needed.

Hestia’s robes are coloured to reflect her role as goddess of the sacred fire, from the blue of the hottest gas jets, through the flickering gold of candle flame, to the white and grey of the palest ash and the black of charcoal.

After fire, comes ash. With her carbon-black hair, eyes and lips, Hestia represents both the light of the flame, and the dark that surrounds it. Each needs the other to exist.

Hestia’s face, fully stitched. The face is the most critical part of the whole piece - if this didn’t work, none of the rest of it would matter. It gives her character and personality, and starts to let her breathe.

Hestia is the goddess of the sacrificial fire, who tends the hearth of Olympus. The first portion of any sacrifice made in flame goes to her. Here, she carries her sacred flame in a bronze bowl, its light illuminating her face, and glinting off the gold disc which frames her.
