AGAIN ROTARY POWER.

By the early to mid ’80s, the rotary was entering a very different world. HKS wasn’t simply bolting a turbo onto a 12A.

The period formula combined a Weber 48IDA, HKS cast intake manifold and pressurized chamber or (surge tank) , Air Research T04 turbo, HKS racing wastegate and HKS air-cooled intercooler into a complete blow through pressurized carbureted turbo system.

And this hardware wasn’t just catalog fantasy. RE Amemiya’s 12A side port SA22C maximum speed car used essentially that same language Weber 48IDA, HKS cast manifold and chamber, Air Research T04, HKS racing wastegate and HKS intercooler while running roughly 1.2 kg/cm² of boost. (17ish psi)

It was part of the period when tuners were discovering just how violently a small rotary could respond once enough air and fuel were forced through it.

Which makes this surviving piece especially interesting.
One has appeared for sale in Japan today at ¥389,800.

It isn’t the complete turbo kit anymore. The T04, intercooler and wastegate are absent. What remains is arguably the most visually recognizable part of the system: the modified Weber, intake manifold and enormous HKS ROTARY TURBO surge tank/plenum that enclosed the carburetor so it could live under boost.

The listing itself describes the manifold as modified for a 13B/FC3S application, showing how these old systems continued to be adapted long after their original era rather than simply disappearing. Similar surviving HKS blow-through Weber assemblies have become exceptionally uncommon.

Forty years ago, this was similar hardware from the early frontier/Amemiya era of Japanese rotary tuning.

Today, one is still sitting out there.
Not quite complete. Not quite forgotten. Still unmistakably HKS.

BEFORE 300 KM/H - FRICTION WAS TUNING.
ISAMI AMEMIYA × FRONTIER // (1982) Advert.

(Amemiya Yatabe image by cliccar.com)

Before 288.
Before the rotary finally crossed 300 km/h.

This was Isami Amemiya in the 277.45 km/h era when his turbo 13B RX-7 stood as one of Japan’s fastest domestically produced tuned cars.

NOW this advertisement isn’t selling another turbo, carburetor or porting trick.

It’s selling friction reduction.

FRONTIER was marketed as Japan’s first domestically produced “friction eliminator” an oil treatment added at roughly 4% of the engine Oil volume. The instructions called for warming the engine, shaking the treatment to suspend its TFE, and introducing it through the oil-level gauge tube.

The advertisement claims Amemiya’s RX-7 used FRONTIER SUPER, GEAR and GRICON treatments essentially attacking friction through the engine and drivetrain as another part of the tuning package.

At 277 km/h, speed was no longer only about making more power.

Oil drag. Bearing friction. Gear losses. Heat. Mechanical resistance.

The philosophy was outright simple

If power is difficult to create, waste less of what you already have.

Whether every claim made for the additive held up scientifically is another question.

But historically, this page captures something important

LUBRICATION ITSELF WAS BEING TREATED AS A FORM OF TUNING.
