Having an elephant baby come for a daytime nap on my farm is enough to make me feel like we doing alright.

Read about why they get right of way at @roundstoneindia -- and who's farm is it really?

Monsoon garden 🌧️🌧️
Everything in the garden is grown from seed or cuttings or sprouted on its own.I try spending no money and very little effort on it, besides the initial work of digging a few swales and lots of mulching. I wait for monsoon and put in whatever plant material i can get my hands on!

In order:
Peacock fern for that bluegreen
A flowering "Moses-in-the-cradle" (for the name)
"Dancing Girl Ginger", great in cocktails
Insulin plant and Elephant Ear/Taro because yum
Ajwain with Pandan at the back, beautiful aromatics by @roundstoneindia

A safehouse in the jungle @roundstoneindia

Thank you @maaliwalli for letting me take shelter in this beautiful home you've built. Land reforested, walls and floors oxidised, vibes immaculate, birdsong loud, spiritual inputs constant, nights quiet, air crispy fresh. I am so grateful for this time.

If anybody wants a getaway for some peace and quiet in the hills of Kodaikanal, hit them up. by @roundstoneindia

Throwback to 6 years ago

The magical #roundstonefarm PDC in Kodaikanal, a time of deep learning, connection, and forest dreams.

Grateful to the lovely Simrit and Ridha for hosting us in that beautiful pocket of the Palani Hills, making space for wild ideas, muddy boots, and the slow unfolding of something beautiful.

ISLAND PERMACULTURE BABY!

Seriously though, coastal ecosystems are one of the most high risk areas in the world today. I just knew that before people, development and...Google maps got to this little piece of paradise, we had to make it permaculture to ensure this coast stays resilient.

Come, help and learn.
We are going to spend time taking things slow, we are going to heal by helping the other, and we are going to learn through play...and lots of salt water and sun!

CONTOUR. CURVE. SLOPE

The first step in any #permaculturedesign is to analyse contour or slope. This is to predict the way water will move through the site. You can then choose to dig on contour (a swale) to save water in the soil, or divert it away from a building (a drain) or make ponds and dams to collect it for later, or to use as a recharge sink.

Helping this lovely lady feel better about her tub baths 😎 - GREY WATER SYSTEMS YAY! Feel so lucky to have clients like her who understand and actually care about learning what's happening on their property - there was no need for her to be there at this meeting with her contractor. Here she is in her #wip home while looking at what is going to be a verdant garden all watered by the washing machine 🤣

Also astute of her to get me involved when the house is still in construction and the plumbing lines are still to be decided! We went through a typical day and how much water is consumed and when... and then the tougher work of figuring out contours (on this project, we will be creating the slopes we need rather than working with what's already there).

Just hope I'll remember to put up the 'after' pictures 🥹

SITE VISIT!! I've been told to share more of my work as a consultant on social media..so here goes :

Brief is to convert a 35 acre mango and litchi orchard to an organic one - matching chemical farming production in 5 years. To shift the property to rainfed irrigation only (through swales etc), to research and find plants that grow easily in the river basin biome of Dehradun which are either medicinal or fragrant (owing to the wildlife the farm is surrounded by). Client has deep faith in Vedic practices and wants to practice daily Agnihotra.

Pic 1 is the famous Doon heirloom rice being grown around a now defunct dairy.

THE OUTTAKES

coz it's about more than water, soil and veggie gardens.

As this beautiful bunch that got together will attest..

It's also about contemplation, kindness, art, beauty, good food 😁 , building community and having a good time doing it! taken in Buransh Heli Resort by @roundstoneindia

SO...WHAT IS PERMACULTURE?

How awkward to not be able to define what it is you do. This isn't because it's over-intellectualised or very complex...but it is more than just growing plants. There are as many definitions as there are permies, and they are all right!

To give you an idea...these are some snippets of our last course in beautiful Devshala in Uttarakhand @buransh_heli_resort --

1. A typical permaculture classroom...one that actually induces learning :)

2. The schedule is colour-coordinated but gruelling!

3. Getting our hands dirty

4. Proto - perma veggie garden design...what does it look like to you?

5. Testing soil

6. A whole lot of shouting about compost...get that carbon going!

7. Visiting and learning from local farmers and traditional knowledge

8. WATER

9. Setting up a veggie garden

10. What is technology? And what does the future of sustainable tech look like?

PDC GOA!
I'm going back to back this year...because I think this is what we need. DM me for the full curriculum. Muster up the time, space and COURAGE it is going to take to make the changes we and our planet soo sorely need. This is not a beach party or ur typical Goa experience, this is learning about, caring for and protecting our fragile coast line.
Whether one feels responsible or not, the tropics will be the most effected by climate change.
Let's do this because we CARE. (though it's gonna be fun too 😂)
