What do you mean birds aren’t just little dinosaurs ?! 🦖

Came across this Kea family deep in the beech forests of Abel Tasman National Park. The way the colour of their feathers blend into the surrounding foliage of the beech is just about perfect. They’d almost impossible to spot if they weren’t making such a noise and trying to destroy all of our tents 😅⛺️

Was hard to choose one or two among the hundreds of frames taken. But decided on these two! 📸

The yawning Ruru 🦉🥱 ! A frame ive been trying to capture for some time now but there are so many limitations that come along with trying to freeze a moment like this in time 🙃

Quite often after Ruru wake up and fly to their favourite observation perch they let out a little yawn or two. I’ve tried to capture this soooo many times but the result has only been blurry non sharp photos. Photographing Ruru often is in low light settings with slower shutter speeds - so any movement becomes blurry quite easily. Fortunately the other evening the stars aligned and I was finally able to capture a Ruru mid yawn 😴 it perched on the most photogenic little spot with just enough light to be able to capture this moment 🤌🏼

Kererū - the balcony series! 🌴🐦🫐

One thing these photos all have in common ( besides for obviously them all featuring a Kererū ) is the fact they were all taken from the comfort of my balcony! 🏡🙌

Really enjoy seeing these super important manu swooping in to feast of plenty of Nikau berries. Almost doing a gymnastic display to make sure they gobble up only the ripest of fruits and after that flying off to not only disperse those seeds but also all the other local produce sitting in their belly’s. A crucial step to aiding in the restoration of neighbouring ngahere 🌳🌳🌳

A photo of a black morph Pīwakawaka is something that has alluded me for quite some time now 🖤📸

Not only because they are tricky species to photograph in the first place. Not because I haven’t seen them on my trips down to the South Island. But because when ever I do stumble across them they are far too friendly, getting much too close to be able to get a photo. ( Minimum focus distance things )🙄😵‍💫

Regardless I finally managed to get a few decent photos of one on my last trip down! So super stoked to be able to share these ones 🙌

Back and forth but this time with a baby Ruru perched in a native Tanekaha tree 🌳🦉📸

One thing I always find quite intriguing is how each of our native rākau react when it comes to bokeh in a photo. The unique foliage shapes of each species often results in very different looking backgrounds and is something I always try to factor into my photography 🍃

Often it’s only a step or two to the left or right to completely change the apperance of an image 👣

One of the new locals 🦉🌳🌊🌀

Managed to stumble across this new local Ruru while my head was down pulling out a whole bunch of invasive weeds in a nearby park. At first I heard the foliage above me shuffle and from hours of experience observing these special birds I knew it just had to be an owl flying from its roost. Long behold a few metres in front of me on a fallen long this beautiful manu was perched. It let me get quite close to capture a few intimate photos 📸🌴

Front and back shots of a Ruru showing off how good their feathering is at making themselves invisible when they want to be 🪶🦉

Their belly & back feathers seem to perfectly immitate light trickling through the tops of the canopy. It makes them almost invisible to the naked eye when they are comfortably perched, but especially when in ponga - one of their favourite roosts 🌴🔆

One of my favourite things when it comes to Ruru feathers are the white speckles on their back. They remind me of the stars on a clear crispy night. In freshly fledged chicks the pattern almost looks perfectly placed as well🌟🙌🏼

Hakuna Mātātā !! 🐗🐾

What better way to stay a chilly day down at the @forestandbird Tautuku cabins then dipping over the road to the Estuary Walkway and experiencing the first rays of sunshine hitting the reeds with these fernbirds popping up all around you ! 🙌🏼🌞

Found the best method for actually getting a glimpse was sitting quietly on the boardwalk to the point where they actually started dashing over it right in-front of myself. Patience is definitely needed to capture frames like this. But so worth it 🤎
