Last Friday we had our first Rowan Community Dance Workshop with Kyle “Just Sole” Clark. What a joy to have our Theatre and Dance majors and minors in the space along with our friends from across the campus. We danced with new friends from Mechanical Engineering, Radio Television and Film and Public Policy!!!! Special thanks to Kyle for sharing his gifts and love of all things Hip Hop with our community!

Kyle will be joining our faculty, teaching Seminar in Dance: Fundamentals of Hip Hop next semester!

Meet Your Instructor:

Kyle “JustSole” Clark is a Philadelphia based artist by way of Baltimore City. He has performed, taught, and competed internationally and served as a U.S. Cultural Ambassador for Hip Hop three times via RHPM, DanceMotionUSA , and Next Level Programs. Kyle has choreographed “Street Dance Theater” works for major dance companies such as Ailey II, Eleone Dance Theater, JUNK, and for musical artists The Roots, MC Lyte, and Ms Jade.

Kyle co-founded @funkysolefundamentals, a dance workshop series dedicated to the preservation of Hip-Hop, House, and Funk Styles, with @queen_dinita in April 2011. That same year he co-founded Just Sole! Street Dance Theater Company (@justsolesdt) where he serves as Lead Choreographer and Artistic Director. Among his many accolades, in 2016, Kyle received a grant from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage for his physical autobiography production “The Life Of A Just Sole”. In 2017, he was awarded the “President’s Distinguished Teaching Award” for his teaching excellence at The University Of The Arts where he earned his MFA in 2021. We join the region’s artistic community in mourning the loss of Dito van Reigersberg, a renowned performer, drag artist, teacher and co-founder of @pigirontheatre. He was 53.

Dito taught Open Canvas and Cabaret for Rowan and @pigironschool’s MFA in Devised Performance, inviting his students to throw mud at the wall, turn their secrets into personas and “verb” the audience.

For 20 years, he performed regularly as @martha_graham_cracker, “the world’s tallest and hairiest drag queen,” delighting audiences with his quick wit, larger-than-life presence and powerhouse voice.

Event Recap: Tony Award-winning director @rachel.chavkin (@hadestown) recently led two master classes for Rowan students: one for MFA Devised Theatre students at @pigironschool and one for Theatre & Dance undergrads on campus in Glassboro.

She concluded the day by joining Department of Theatre & Dance chair Lane Savadove onstage for “An Evening with Rachel Chavkin” at Tohill Theatre.
