Here are FIVE things you can do to hit the ground running in your first week on campus.

1. Read Your Syllabus!

Every one of your classes has a syllabus available to view on Canvus.

Login, find them, read them.

Take note of required books or readings you need to get a hold of. Put big project dates in your calendar.

You’re the captain of this ship. The syllabus is your compass!

2. Meet Your Advisor.

This Fall, join us in celebrating the enduring and distinguished careers of retiring faculty members Dr. Herb “DOC” Appelson, Department of Art, and Dr. Jane Graziano, the Departments of Content Area Teacher Education & Art.

Each of these professors have had distinguished careers in and outside of Rowan. In addition to all their achievements, both professors have become far more to us here at the Department of Art. Between their guidance, teaching and valued friendship, we will all miss seeing these professors in and around Westby Hall.

Alumni and friends of the Department are invited to participate in open art studios in Westby Hall on Saturday, October 24th from 8–10:30 a.m. followed by a short ceremony honoring Herb and Jane.

🌼 A walk through Westby Hall's smell garden is all you need to unwind and reflect on Spring renewal! 🌞

𝘞𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘣𝘺 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘴, 𝘈 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘚𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘎𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯 invites visitors not just to stop and savor the fragrance of native plants, but also to learn how to cultivate a critical wildlife habitat! 🌱

Professors Jen Kitson and Donna Sweigart established and maintain this garden to challenge traditional aesthetic garden practices such as turf monocultures and invasive ornamental species. Westby Wilds offers a living example or how native species can create beautiful vibrant landscapes AND biodiversity!

The human sense of smell has direct links to emotion and memory which allows for a deepened relationship between people, places and aromatic plants.

✨STUDENT HIGHLIGHT✨

Hczsol Chambers has just completed her first year at Rowan University and has already made Rowan history!!! 🏆 She is the very first student to have successfully passed all 5 of her studio classes taken during the Spring 2026 Semester! 💛 We couldn't be more proud of her and her accomplishment!

Hczsol is from Queens, NY and has always known art would be her calling. Having a background mostly in pencil and paper, coming to Rowan has allowed her to branch out and discover a love for different mediums like charcoal and oil paint (one of her all time favorites) 🌟

Some more about Hczsol: Her favorite music genre is Alt Rock 🎶 She speaks Mandarin Chinese 🎤 And she is very proud of her sister who is also a prof studying Music Engineering!

Even though her achievements are her own, Hczsol also wanted to thank every professor of hers who encouraged her growth and magnified her passion for the arts! 🤎💛

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT: 💡Krys Lemonias

Krys is one of our amazing professors and an area coordinator for Westby. Her work as well as several students' is currently on display at Stockton University's Noyes Museum of Art as part of the NJ Monuments to Migration and Labor Exhibition and Emerging Visions Exhibition ✨

🌊 For NJMML, she created a tapestry and sculpture in response to the stories gathered from the community events. These pieces celebrate the history of Black migrants who seasonally shucked oysters in the Port Norris area. With an image reference from the Library of Congress, she constructed the tapestry using clothes collected from community events, scrap fabric, a bucket, oyster packaging, sail and shells from Bayshore Center at Bivalve. The sculpture uses a wheelbarrow often used to move the oysters, a sail and shells also from Bayshore Center at Bivalve that fills it.
