On Saturday, we stepped into the in-between…

Not who we were, not yet who we’ll be.

The unlearning, the questioning, the quiet becoming.

Thank you for moving through it with us, for embracing the unfinished, for letting volume 15 unfold in real time.

What will you become next?🦋🦋

VOLUME 15: BECOMING

Becoming is not a destination, but a continuous unfolding. Volume 15 traces the evolution of identity through moments of innocence, fracture, rebellion and acceptance, capturing what it means to grow within a world that constantly attempts to define who we should be.

From the dreamlike optimism of Bliss, to the harsh realizations of Disillusion, through the raw vulnerability of Awakening and into the quiet self-possession of Existence, this issue reflects the beauty and discomfort of transformation.

To become is to continuously evolve. To unlearn, rediscover, and exist authentically within your own becoming. by @rowdymagazine

Just five days after stepping into the role of White House press secretary, Katie Zacharia is already out, following a controversial debut and growing scrutiny surrounding her qualifications.

Zacharia, who replaced Karoline Leavitt, delivered her first White House briefing on October 13, 2026. The briefing lasted approximately 14 minutes, during which she took questions from three news outlets before ending the session. Her performance quickly sparked criticism and debate across social media.

Beyond her brief appearance behind the podium, Zacharia faced questions about her professional credentials, particularly her legal education, failure to pass the California bar exam, and previous work experience in China. The controversy intensified in the days following her appointment, ultimately coinciding with her departure from the position.

The role of White House press secretary comes with a responsibility to communicate clearly, answer difficult questions, and provide transparency to the American public. For an administration already facing ongoing criticism over its credibility and accountability, a press secretary departing after just five days raises further questions about the administration’s appointment process and leadership.

With another vacancy behind the White House podium, questions now turn to who will fill the position next and whether the administration will prioritize experience, transparency, and public trust in its next appointment.

The Trump administration wants to win the AI race, but at what cost?

President Donald Trump has appointed Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton as the administration’s new AI czar. In this new position, Clayton will lead the “Super Intelligence Force”, which is responsible for managing the federal government’s operations with AI companies and stakeholders. The move signals that the White House increasingly views artificial intelligence as a concern of national security and global competition.

With the Trump administration favoring industry oversight over stronger regulations, who will hold AI companies accountable when their actions put the public at risk?

Already, the rise of AI is raising questions about misinformation, privacy and cybersecurity. With this, the government has a responsibility to protect the public, not simply push for technological growth. These new developments raise questions about what the future of AI will look like, as well as what the government’s role will be in shaping it.

Paramount Skydance won the bidding war for Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) on Oct. 10 when it completed its $110 billion acquisition, bringing together entertainment assets under the name Skydance.

Paramount+ and HBO Max are now under the same corporate ownership, which means that a combined streaming service (or bundle) is likely. HBO Max owns hit franchises such as Harry Potter and Game of Thrones, so a price change is likely as it competes with Netflix and Disney+. Its larger content library, while convenient, might come at a cost to consumers.

With two studios coming together, there is less competition in the market. This could result in fewer films being released in cinemas and less variety, as bigger corporations will likely focus on franchises rather than original films. This creates fewer opportunities for aspiring filmmakers. In light of these concerns, Paramount pledged to release at least 30 theatrical films to reassure moviegoers, but some are still skeptical.

Another UF HOCO in the books! 🐊🧡💙 Congrats, Gators, you survived the longest week of the fall semester! From putting your costume bin to work overtime for a week of frat and sorority events to having no class on Friday, to the Homecoming Parade, and Gator Growl featuring Nikki Glaser, there was never a moment to breathe this week. Don’t even get us started on the 8 am tailgates, nonstop rain, and an unfortunate loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks… whatever those are. 😭 Safe to say Rowdy knows the highs were high and the lows were low, but there’s nothing quite like Homecoming in the Swamp! Until next year, Gators! 🐊

Not every friendship we make in college is meant to last beyond it. But each one can teach us something about who we are and who we want beside us.

Freshman year, everyone was a stranger, and every friendship was a new beginning. Sophomore year, the excitement was still there, but those unfamiliar faces had started to feel like home. Junior year, those same friends became the people who stood by us through the highs, the lows, and everything in between. And senior year, we’re learning that the hardest part of college isn’t leaving the place we called home, but saying goodbye to the people who made it one.

Our friendships will continue to change long after college ends. Taking a moment to reflect on the people in our lives can help us make room for relationships that grow alongside us, not just ones that remind us of who we used to be.

There’s a particular kind of magic to college life. The kind hidden in roommate debriefs, oddly specific themed nights, trinkets scattered across an apartment, and the sacred hour of doomscrolling after a long day. Somewhere between feeling completely grown and still collecting tiny figurines, we’re all living through the same strange mix of chaos, comfort and Sunday scaries.

So, Rowdy’s here to remind you: we’re all a little more alike than we think. Embrace the weird little rituals, romanticize the mundane and make the most of it while you’re here. Go gators, and have a great rest of your semester! 🐊

Looking to get off campus? Here’s Rowdy’s guide to some of the best places to go!

Heartwood Soundstage is such a fun place to go to see just about anyone. If you love an outdoor concert vibe that keeps it local, Heartwood is the place.

The House of Waking Life Tea House lets you enjoy tea flights and special lattes from one of the most unique spots in Gainesville.

4th Ave Food Park has an array of options, from sandwiches to square pizza to baked goods. The food park is always the vibe of the evening and is in a little nook just downtown of campus.

If you want something that says Gainesville, you have to go to Satchel’s. They’ve got the best deep-dish in North Central Florida and a very cool vibe to go along with it.

If you’re looking for a serene walk or long trail run, come to Depot Park. It’s a large outdoor area with plenty of space and lots of nature.

Located across from Depot Park, the Lynx Bookstore is a great place to support a local business if you love reading. They have all the fan favorites, as well as books currently banned in Florida schools. They also carry books by BIPOC, LGBTQ+ and Florida authors. Stop in and read something!

I really could go on, but Gainesville is so much more than the University of Florida. Get out of your dorm and campus bubble and go exploring. Maybe next time your favorite place will make our list!

Rent is expensive, groceries are somehow even more expensive, and your bank account is fighting for its life. Now, interest rates are going up, too. But what does that actually mean for college students?

On Sept. 16, the Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point, setting its target range at 3.75% to 4%. The move came as policymakers continued working to bring inflation under control. Basically, the Fed is making it more expensive for banks to borrow money, which can eventually make borrowing more expensive for everyone else, too.

So, what does that actually mean for college students? Credit card debt could become more expensive. Many credit cards have variable interest rates, meaning their rates can change as benchmark rates move. For students already carrying a balance, that could mean more money going toward interest instead of groceries, gas or next month’s rent. Buying a car or a house could cost more. If you plan to finance a car after graduation or eventually buy a house, higher interest rates can mean higher monthly payments. Even if homeownership feels like a distant dream right now, these rates can affect your future financial plans.

It’s not all bad news. There is a potential upside for savers. Higher interest rates can mean better returns on some savings accounts and certificates of deposit, although banks do not always pass rate increases on to customers in full.

The next few months matter. Federal Reserve officials have signaled that another rate increase could be possible before the end of 2026, but future decisions will depend on how inflation and the economy develop.
