Rather than fleeing a winter storm, Buffalo sometimes turn to face it, lower their heads, and stand their ground.

Courage isn’t the absence of a storm. It’s the willingness to face it. And in proportion to our courage - our lives shrink or expand.

The story of the American Bison is one of the most powerful, haunting, and tragic stories of the American West.

Once numbering about 30–60 million, these magnificent animals sustained entire civilizations.

They once roamed the very valley where I now live.

Imagine enormous herds stretching toward the horizon. The sound of thousands of hooves. The ground trembling.

By the late 1800s, following decades of relentless slaughter and westward expansion, fewer than 1,000 remained.
Their destruction was not simply the result of hunting. It was also used as a deliberate means of dispossessing Indigenous peoples.

Destroying the Buffalo meant weakening the nations that depended upon them, forcing communities from their lands and onto reservations.

The U.S. Army supported commercial buffalo hunters in some circumstances, recognizing the devastating consequences for Indigenous nations.

By 1902, they were almost erased from the earth. Just 23 wild Buffalo remained in Yellowstone National Park.

Through conservation efforts, protection, and Indigenous stewardship, the Buffalo was saved from extinction.

Today, hundreds of thousands of bison exist across North America, and Indigenous nations are helping restore them to Tribal lands.

For many Indigenous nations, the buffalo is sacred. Their traditions recognize the profound connection between the animal, the land, and all living things.

The buffalo sustained their people, just as it nourished the earth beneath its feet.

A sacred circle of life, provision, gratitude, and renewal.

The story of the buffalo isn’t just about surviving hardship.

It’s about the possibility of renewal and restoration after devastating destruction and loss.

May this painting remind us to:

Face the storm.
Endure.
Restore.
Rise again.

Artist Statement:

Using only materials from the earth itself — lime, minerals, and pigments.

The storm clouds powerfully brewing, rising and swelling with energy.

To me, the display of nature — sunrises, sunsets, storm clouds, lightening and rolling thunder — is one enormous celebration.

An orchestra and a rock concert combined.

Creation doing its thing.

The greatest show on earth.

It awakes my soul.

I’ve layered, sculpted, and etched this song.

“The mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.”
Isaiah 55:12

Artist Statement:

A Painting from my roots. The legendary “man from snowy river“ going down the treacherous descent.

I was raised on a sheep farm in the Snowy Mountains - Australia.

I’ve lived in Utah for 24 years and every day someone asks where I’m from, I say.. “have you watched the movie “ The Man From Snowy River” - that’s where I’m from. That’s what it looks like.”

When I watch the movie it’s nostalgic - the landscape takes me back to my childhood and the horse culture that inspired Banjo Paterson’s poetry and the movie. I cry every time I watch it.

As a kid, I’d go looking for wild bush horses- in the Australian high country. The Brumbies. They seemed mysterious and magical to me and I’ve been obsessed with them ever since.

Some lines from “The Man from Snowy River” a poem by Banjo Patterson that were inspired by the horsemen of the late 1800’s in my area.

“There was movement at the station, for the word had passed around
That the colt from Old Regret had got away,
And had joined the wild bush horses - he was worth a thousand pound,
So all the cracks had gathered to the fray.
All the tried and noted riders from the stations near and far
Had mustered at the homestead overnight,
For the bushmen love hard riding where the wild bush horses are,
And the stock-horse snuffs the battle with delight.
…
He hails from Snowy River, up by Kosciusko’s side,
Where the hills are twice as steep and twice as rough,
Where a horse’s hoofs strike firelight from the flint stones every stride,
…
I have seen full many horsemen since I first commenced to roam,
But nowhere yet such horsemen have I seen.
…
He sent the flint-stones flying, but the pony kept his feet,
He cleared the fallen timbers in his stride,
And the man from Snowy River never shifted in his seat —
It was grand to see that mountain horseman ride.
Through the stringy barks and saplings, on the rough and broken ground,
Down the hillside at a racing pace he went;
And he never drew the bridle till he landed safe and sound,
At the bottom of that terrible descent.”

He’s a tough man
who works hard
He carries it all

He’s a sweet boy
his hair still wild
his shoulders still light
Yet to know the weight of a man

The cruel arithmetic
providing
without missing
the becoming

He tells himself
Leave it unfinished
Stay a little longer
Hear the story again
Catch the lizard
Build the trap
Wrestle with him

But he’s wrestling with
what really matters

The boy won’t wait

Will he know
before it’s too late?

For the room where he drops his keys
after a long day.
A reminder of what all the work was for.

For the office of the man
working hard to give them everything.
Hang it where he’ll see it
before he works too late.

I named this one LINDSAY.

Have you ever met someone who just knows how to shine in their little world.
Who lights you up every time you see them.
Whose energy is magnetic because they have found out who they are and they be it on purpose. Who’s not afraid to break a few rules and make joy the baseline and fun the priority.
It’s cowgirl energy. @lcatano my muse.

I named this one JOLENE.

She’s totally gonna take my man. Her Beauty is beyond compare.

“Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I’m beggin’ of you, please don’t take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don’t take him just because you can

Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of auburn hair
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green
Your smile is like a breath of spring
Your voice is soft like summer rain
And I cannot compete with you, Jolene

He talks about you in his sleep
And there’s nothin’ I can do to keep
From cryin’ when he calls your name, Jolene
And I can easily understand
How you could easily take my man
But you don’t know what he means to me, Jolene

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I’m beggin’ of you, please don’t take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don’t take him just because you can

You could have your choice of men
But I could never love again
He’s the only one for me, Jolene
I had to have this talk with you
My happiness depends on you
And whatever you decide to do, Jolene

Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
I’m beggin’ of you, please don’t take my man
Jolene, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene
Please don’t take him even though you can”

I named this one HANNAH.

I recently tagged along with my sister @torahbright and @missarahglover and spent time with @ballerinafarm and her family. My respect for this force of a woman maximized. There is not much more powerful than the energy of authenticity and I felt that in her. I was inspired by this woman and man @hogfathering bound together with a dream, a vision, and the work ethic and belief to bring it to life.

In just a few days, Hannah’s vision for “Root to Relevé” @ballerinafarmstore @balletwest1 would come alive: the art of farm to table food and the art of ballet meeting on the same piece of earth, with the Uinta Mountains rising behind it. No better backdrop. Beauty layered on Beauty.

Listening to Hannah speak with excitement about this dream of her two loves coming together in the same world reminded me not to give up on my own dreams.

That’s the power of beholding another woman make something wild and beautiful happen.

So I named this one Hannah.
