Very pleased to be shortlisted in this year's RPS International Exhibition.

This portrait getting shortlisted and exposure in major photography competitions means a lot and wouldn't have been possible without the women in the picture, Nasima @nasimabeepoet, Shireen @anannamcr and Safina @saf.is.mcr. I am immensely grateful to them for trusting me as a photographer and for the invaluable work they do, each from their own platforms and communities.

The portrait is part of my project Hope.Despair.Miracles which highlights and celebrates the people making a difference in Longsight, Southeast Manchester, the working-class multiracial neighbourhood I live in.

On the opposite corner of my house a smallish banner appeared quietly overnight reflecting one of the things that makes this election so tricky, at least it's something that will dictate many people's vote in my neighbourhood.

Today's by-election in my constituency is getting tense. A man is shouting and swearing at another man on the corner of my house, opposite the polling station. Another man from an independent broadcasting company is reporting the account of the day so far, he seems to be raising his voice a lot because I can hear him clearly with my windows closed. A group of "Greens" with a small banner saying VOTE GREEN was parading down my street earlier. A mobile loudspeaker was calling people to vote for some party I didn't hear clearly enough.

Meanwhile, the kids are in class in the school the polling station is being held and I can see them from my front windows trying to concentrate.

It's a grey, cold and wet day. I just hope Reform doesn't win.

I'm in a prime spot to follow what goes on. taken in Longsight, Manchester by @roxanaallison

Recently I've been debating whether to delete my Instgratification account forever. For now, I've uninstalled the app from my phone until further notice. I won't be checking anything including DMs. If you need to contact me, please email me. Have a wonderful end to 2025! by @roxanaallison

Home. Despair. Miracles. (2019-2024)

Emerging in 2019 from a need to feel hopeful, Hope. Despair. Miracles. focuses on the ordinary people making a real difference, in Longsight, a working-class multi-ethnic neighbourhood in South East Manchester.

Fourteen years ago, @roxanaallison left Mexico, her motherland, to cross the ocean in search of her British identity, carrying with her a romanticised idea of the so-called developed world.’ Manchester, her birthplace, is now her second home.

Moving here opened her eyes to a rich mix of worlds, drawn from a historical Empire, that cohabit and collide. Longsight, a densely populated area known for its large Pakistani community is in essence, the closest version of Mexico she found accidentally.

The area’s chaotic surface conceals an abundance of positive change that remind us that a place should never be judged by its front cover.

In a post-Brexit UK and post-Covid world that is enduring a cost-of-living crisis, ‘Hope. Despair. Miracles.’ shows us hope through action and confirms that people-led change is attainable through the power of togetherness.

To remain hopeful, the images invite us to find beauty in the ordinary and shift our focus onto the small wins. These wins, in the face of great odds, can seem like miracles.

Two portraits included in ‘Hope. Despair. Miracles.’ were winners of the British Journal of Photography Portrait of Britain Vol. 6.
