This isn’t the vacation post I wanted to write.

I flew from JFK to Amsterdam five days ago, and my wheelchair came back with both titanium push handles broken off. Scratched frame, split handles—basically, the chair equivalent of “you had one job.”

I’ve been flying back and forth between Amsterdam and NYC for over a decade. Throughout all those trips, I’ve seen the same pattern: my wheelchair returned damaged, delayed, or even forgotten on the tarmac.

I contacted KLM Customer Care immediately after this latest incident. Still no response after 5 days.

When I fly, I have to hand over the most important thing I own—my wheelchair—to total strangers. I can’t supervise it, and I just have to hope that 7 hours later, it comes back in one piece.

I’m not handing over luggage. I’m handing over my legs. My freedom. My ability to safely move through the world.
And when I got it back? Broken. Again.

Wheelchairs aren’t generic or easily replaceable. They’re custom-fit, medical devices that weren’t built to be tossed around in cargo like a hockey bag.

To make things worse: asking for help is already one of the hardest things for me. Now I have to ask people to assist me using a chair that’s missing the very parts that make helping possible. No handles = no safe way to push or lift. It’s awkward, physically exhausting, and incredibly limiting.

This happened right before I had to catch multiple trains to the West of France and attend my best friend’s wedding—in a half-functioning chair.
The result? Physical pain, emotional stress, and out-of-pocket repair costs I shouldn’t have to cover.

This isn’t rare. It’s routine. Disabled travelers are constantly being put at risk just for daring to board a plane.
Airlines: If you’re going to break something, make it a record for better accessibility—not the equipment people rely on to live.

Wheelchairs are not luggage. Disabled travelers deserve better. @klm @delta I want accountability and change.
