This quiz was designed to surface ⚡️how social conditioning shows up on the climbing wall, especially for women⚡️. Comment how many “yes’s” you get, and which one hit the hardest.

Each question surfaces a subtle but powerful moment where many women alter their behavior not because of their actual skill or readiness, but because of the cultural programming we’ve internalized about performance, visibility, risk, and gender.

This quiz helps name where pressure to disappear, perform, or self-monitor has replaced real growth, joy, or authority in your climbing.

You won’t get a “score.” You’ll get clarity.

My course:📗WOMEN ON THE WALL📗
begins this THURS! 🔗Link in bio!

Description:
Through movement and targeted reflection, Women on the Wall reveals the silent expectations that have shaped how women show up; in our beta, in our bodies, and in our lives. Together, we unlearn the patterns we were praised for, but that never made us powerful.

We’re not here to adapt better to the system’s expectations. We’re here to stop mistaking it for normal; because it was never made for us.

By the end of the course, you won’t just be climbing with stronger technique. You’ll have a greater depth of self-trust, clearer boundaries, and the kind of embodied authority that stays with you long after the climb is over.

There was a time I thought I had to choose.

Blend in or be seen. Wear what felt right to me, or what looked “real” to them. In my early climbing, I showed up to the gym in the clothes I liked, the colors I felt good in. Hair done. Mascara on. Not for attention. Not for approval. Just because that’s how I’ve always moved through the world.

But in a culture that celebrates the unbrushed, unbothered aesthetic of the dirtbag climber, showing up that way didn’t read as neutral. It read as violation. Not of rules, but of pattern. And patterns, even unspoken, have a way of punishing what doesn’t match.

This essay excerpt (slide 2) isn’t a personal story in the way people expect. It’s a reckoning with the unacknowledged codes of a community I love. It’s about lineage, assumptions, and the way silence can still isolate without anyone saying a word.

It’s also about staying visible.

For anyone who’s ever been the only one in the room wearing color. For anyone who’s softened themselves to belong or be taken seriously. For anyone who’s wondered if being “girly” made them less of a climber.

It didn’t. It doesn’t. It never will.

This is a love letter to the versions of us that did not shrink. That wore the gloss, took up space, and thus made room.
Just. By. Being.

💕 ~ A pink girl, who entered a patchouli world.

☝🏻Not all men, but always a man.

I mostly experience this from people in my comments (shocking), but throughout my career it’s always been men who have argued the most when I’ve felt I needed to correct them in the gym for their safety. They
- play devils advocate
- say other gyms haven’t said that to them
- want every detail of evidence & proof: according to who, what, & where
- say they’ve been doing it that way for X years without injury or issues
- that other staff haven’t said anything (in truth they just haven’t noticed it yet… or in some cases they know you’re a pain & don’t want to deal with you)

It doesn’t matter that you try your best to be kind & patient & take the time to explain & respond to the best of your abilities… some of them give you attitude & continue to disagree & threaten to revoke their membership or complain as if it wouldn’t actually make THEM look bad. It’s like they forget they signed an agreement to follow the gym’s rules & I’m just enforcing them for their safety.

On a positive note, I’ve also had beautiful interactions with men who are incredibly open to learn from me & absorb all they can; even if the interaction starts as a safety concern or correction. Some men are eager for opportunities to grow, improve, & be as safe as possible. Sadly, these interactions are rare.

NOTEWORTHY: Climbers often hold climbing close to their identity. They may really pride themselves on being great at climbing, knowing a lot, perhaps how climbing makes them unique, etc. Thus, it can be a big blow to their ego to be told by me (or anyone) that they have been doing something in not the best way; putting them in defense mode. This perspective helps me hold a place of understanding & kindness & allows me to not take it personal when they respond the way they do. With this small but understandable justification (?) applying to all genders, it’s always been a man in my experience.

A macro overview of weeks 1 + 2
of my 10 week Course:📗WOMEN ON THE WALL📗.
Class begins this THURS (9.11.25)
🔗 Link in bio!

Each class is 2hrs; about 50/50 :
• efficiency focused technical climbing &
• psychological learning (or UN-learning). Depending on the week that could mean movement based drills (climbing re-patterning), women-specific nervous system regulation strategies, practice taking up space, reflection/discussion questions, somatic work, etc.
~ weeks 1 & 2 also come with (optional) homework for your climbing session between classes

🎙️Previous W.O.W. students:
🗣️ "I've been having more fun climbing & I look
forward to it more! I think this has to do with the boundary setting work we've done. Also, I've always wanted that
community/communal feeling in climbing & never truly felt it until this... my therapist literally hears about this class every week!"
🗣️ "I've been climbing for 25 years & I've learned more in this course than I have in all that time... This is such a nice, meaningful, & safe space!"
🗣️ "This has improved my climbing. It takes so much less effort to climb this (new) way! & I have grown too... I've gone from self-conscious to self-aware."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Most climbers initiate movement from the top down. A reach. A pull. But efficient climbing begins from the base. From precision, not instinct. From groundedness, not grasping.

This DRILL reverses the impulse.
It teaches your body to wait. To organize.
To initiate with the feet, not the hands.
To allow the hips to carry weight
before asking the arms to commit.
To understand that reaching too early is not assertive.
It’s wasteful.

When your feet actually finish the move before you go,
your hips can drive instead of follow.
When your hips stay in it, you’re not
dragging weight, you’re transferring it.
And when your hands finally move,
they’re not searching. They’re arriving.

I’m calling this next chapter of life “Sovereignty & Authorship”.

When people look up the word ✨sovereignty, it often reads as cold or political, defined by state control or national independence. But that’s not the only way to understand it.

In healing spaces, especially among women & queer folks, sovereignty is being reshaped. It’s not about power over. It’s about power within.

Here, it means:
• Autonomy without isolation
• Self-leadership without rigidity
• Inner authority rooted in wholeness, not ego
• The refusal to abandon yourself to gain acceptance

& ✨authorship is more than writing.

It’s authorship of your thoughts. Your voice. Your decisions.
Authorship of how you move through the world…
your presence, your boundaries, your truth.

It means I don’t just live out a script handed to me.
I revise. I reframe. I choose.

To claim authorship is to take your becoming into your own hands.
Not to correct your story, but to honor it.
Not to hold blame, but to hold awareness.

Not everything that shaped me was chosen.
But authorship is how I choose what I carry forward.
It’s a return to who I might have been,
had the system never tried to sculpt me first.

My upcoming book isn’t just something I’m making.
It’s something I’m remembering.
More than a project, it’s a practice.
A return to what was always mine, beneath the noise.

Queer pride in climbing isn’t about inclusion. It’s about transformation. It’s about claiming space: on granite, in gyms, in movement, in language, where queer bodies & voices have too often been edited down.

They aren’t asking for permission to participate. They’re already climbing, already leading. Pride isn’t about existence, it’s about being seen in full. It means not having to code-switch or contort to belong.

The dominant culture in many gyms is unspoken but deeply felt. Who gets offered beta. The tone of a partners voice at the belay. The locker room stares, unconscious bias, & group chats that never quite feel safe. Pride breaks that open. It creates visibility not as performance, but presence. It gives queer climbers a way to show up as whole people, not fragments.

It’s what happens when someone who has spent years being told they’re “too much” or “not enough” pulls over a crux move & hears their name shouted at the anchors. When they feel chosen, not tolerated. When the gym becomes a home, not just a facility or a test.

For trans & nonbinary climbers, pride is subtle & constant. Finding gear that fits. Trusting a partner with pronouns. Taping over brands that never considered their body. That’s not just climbing. That’s liberation.

Some say climbing is apolitical. That rocks don’t care who you are. But people do. & pride reminds us that identity shapes every space we move through.

When queer climbers get to lead, coach, route-set, speak, everyone benefits. Their presence expands what strength looks like. Their voice redefines what belonging can mean.

Queer pride isn’t seasonal. It’s elemental. It’s not a side campaign. It’s a core route.

& it matters more than ever.

I can confirmeth it not, nor denieth it.
Yet, if this gathering doth reach 150 hearts of approval,
More LORE shall be bestowed upon thee. 🔮

🩷 My pink coat is more popular than I am.

#leadclimbing #tradclimbing #climbinglegends #sportclimb #ClimbersOfInstagram #ClimbinglsLife #outdoorwomen #womenclimbers #womenclimb #sheclimbs #betababe #climbersrock #climberscollective #indoorrockclimbing #indoorbouldering Some say the hot pink coat is a coaching tool.
That it helps athletes track her during demos.
Others say it's to disarm men at the spray wall.
One woman insists she once saw it glow under bad gym lighting
and take on the shape of a crash pad mid-fall.
Whatever it is, it's not just a coat.
