I’m so moved and beyond words to have BEACON premiere at Tribeca. During this time last year we were just starting production, and it has been the craziest and most rewarding project I’ve ever had the privilege of helming.

I’m immensely proud of this film. You can feel all the heart, blood, sweat and tears that came from all who worked on it. And a true tour de force performance from @demianbichiroficial and @juliagtelles - both who took my breath away every time I said ‘action.’

Big love to @elmanfilms who has championed me, and this movie, straight from the start. We did it 🥹💕

@daphneqinwu here, I didn’t set out to make an entire other post about preproduction on BEACON (2024), but I had so many materials on hand so here’s a look at some of the planning that went into our lighthouse thriller!

I use a lot of spreadsheets and google drive docs to keep track of shot lists and storyboards, I usually have the shot list by script order and separate tabs for days that need separate logistics. For this film I had composite shots (different lighthouses and terrain), dusk-for-night scheduling, Sailboat days (wet docked + real sailing), and blue screen days all separated out.

Our main night exterior location was on the Ferryland peninsula, which was accessible only by ATVs on a narrow dirt causeway from the mainland (where basecamp was). This meant we were severely limited on what we could bring across safely. So no dolly, no cranes, we couldn’t even put up a flag up in the wind! 😅

This is when you gotta work smarter and not harder - for all of our night exteriors every single big unit was enclosed inside the actual lighthouse. We had our 10k Molebeam “lighthouse” light swiveling, our HMI moonlight, and even our Lightning Strikes in the actual lighthouse shooting out from the gallery windows (which had to be composited with the larger lighthouse anyway).

Everything was safer this way, and we shifted blocking on the terrain for different scenes, cheated the geography to have our lighting work for us and not against us. All the smaller units on the ground with us were battery powered LEDs whenever we can, handheld LEDs ( @asteraofficial Titans) whenever we could, to keep us agile.

I need to tag the whole crew again because you can imagine how hard everyone worked!

It was 2010 when I first adopted Yaya from a sketchy Craigslist ad advertising purebred Shih Tzus. (Plot twist: they weren’t purebred.) They had one left… A tiny, 12 week old puppy named Roxy, and I felt like it was divine intervention. Since there could only be one, my mom gave her the name ‘YaYa’ derivedfrom 小Y頭 - a Chinese term for a playful little girl.

I was feeling very lost - I just graduated college, and didn’t know where to go. I could either move to Taiwan or take a leap of faith and move to LA to do god knows what. For some reason I thought adopting a dog would be the answer, a tether for the void of uncertainty.

She was taking a nap when I walked in, and slowly opened her eyes and looked at me. As I got closer to her, she stretched out her little legs to touch my face. I was done for. I was a kid adopting a kid. And we were going to try and figure this out together.

For the next 16 years, Yaya witnessed every incarnation of my adult self. People came and went, but she was the only constant. She saw all of my high points, and my very, very low points. Seasons of my life where it was filled with people, other times when it was just the two of us. Every time she matched my energy and the season with patience, love, and without judgement.

If you knew Yaya, you know she had a one in a million personality. She came on set with me, traveled to places near and far, she knew how to have a good time but knew when to provide quiet comfort. She doesn’t allow you to mess with her, and she’s willing to take on any big dog in a fight without backing down. In these later years her body started to give out on her, but her spirit remained strong and resilient up until her last breath.

We said goodbye just on the cusp of her 16th birthday.
With her passing, a chapter of my adulthood ends as I enter a new one. One without her. On grief - where do I put all my love where there is now a large, empty space?

Thank you for choosing me, Yaya. Thank you for teaching me how boundless my capacity for love can be. I know you will watch over me and everyone who loves you until our time comes. Until then, sleep well my girl 一路好走 🩷
