just a year in the life of a young black hustla 😎🤙🏽 ty 2023!

tbh i can’t believe we’re already in 2024… i barely have had a minute to catch my breath and reflect on last year!

here’s a few things i learned in my second full year as a small business owner living in oakland:

1. 💩 will sometimes hit the fan…
last year started off with two back-to-back robberies at the salon 😖 and ngl they shook me! but you’ll find out two really important things when craziness strikes like that…

2. it will become obvious who has your back 💫 your star employees, most loyal customers, closest friends will all rally around to support you 🫶🏽 notice and remember those people and pour back into those cups. they will keep you going strong!  
3. the more committed you are to your mission, the more resilient you will become! 💪🏾 even the biggest trials and obstacles can’t hold you back if you are driven by a deeper calling and are needed by the community  
4. the best bosses keep their hands dirty 😏🧹… staying grounded and doing the dirty work when you can (in my case, laundry, mopping, answering phone calls, replying to DMs, etc) will allow you to be a better leader and stay humble, even when it’s someone elses “job” now. all tasks in the business are important and you’re never above any of them

5. prioritize + stay in constant collaboration with other like-minded creatives 🤝 even if it doesn’t pay! stay connected and opportunities you’ve never even dreamed of will find their way to you 🦄🌈 
6. infuse joy and levity into every single day! work truly doesn’t have to suck. you can choose to bring humor, fun, and positivity into every interaction you have, no matter how “serious” it needs to be. you can choose to spread joy and light at work — i promise everyone will feel and appreciate it. i’m grateful to my team and clients for always keeping my spirits high, even when the going gets tough.
