Meet Kimberly Tholl, RRU associate faculty member, Doctor of Business Administration student, and now, Kelly Outstanding Teaching Award winner.

She loves supply chain management’s unpredictability. And she loves sharing her stories of career ups and downs in teaching International Business Operations and Supply Chain Management at Royal Roads.

In choosing Tholl for the Kelly Outstanding Teaching award, the Awards selection committee remarked on her openness to vulnerability and self-actualization as well as her work to bridge theory and practice to help students link their course concepts to real-world decisions and development.

This National Week for Truth and Reconciliation, we asked members of our Royal Roads University community, “What action are you taking toward Truth and Reconciliation?”

Here is some of what associate faculty member Ashli Akins, said:

“Our ways of defining learning, teaching, and ways of knowing – including what it means to “be an academic” – need to be decolonialized. As I reflect on what the ongoing processes of Truth and Reconciliation mean to me, this is a small but integral part of that ongoing journey.

"I try to get my students out of classrooms and onto the lands and waters as much as possible, to learn directly from Indigenous leaders about what they want to share in their own words and ways. And to build long-term community relationships that are deep, authentic, and mutually generative.”

This National Week for Truth and Reconciliation, we asked members of our Royal Roads University community, “What action are you taking toward Truth and Reconciliation?”

Here is some of what Philip Steenkamp, President and Vice-Chancellor, said:

"Advancing reconciliation requires both intention and humility. A teaching I learned from Monique Gray Smith, best-selling author and former Royal Roads University board member, and one that runs through many of her books, is that healing and reconciliation are strengthened when we acknowledge our interconnectedness and express genuine gratitude for the gifts others bring to our lives.

"I try to put this into practice by listening deeply, continuing to learn, building respectful relationships with Indigenous communities, and helping create conditions where Indigenous knowledge, voices, and aspirations are valued and reflected in our work."

This National Week for Truth and Reconciliation, we asked members of our Royal Roads University community, “What action are you taking toward Truth and Reconciliation?”

Here is some of what Kyla McLeod, Director of Student Services, said.

"We can all find ways to help us understand and activate our role in reconciliation. For example, I am in a book club, and I use that space to have good conversations about great books by Indigenous authors, and those conversations inevitably lead to discussions about mobilizing knowledge and change.

"Having family members within the K-12 system is another way to engage in active learning about reconciliation. By taking time to ask my kids what they are learning in their coursework about the TRC, by supporting them with projects, by participating in their field trips, and by facilitating conversations where they can reflect on their learning, I have been able to expand my own understanding.

"I have also found that by supporting Indigenous creators, like playwrights, authors and musicians, or by attending cultural events that are open to non-Indigenous communities, like the Powwow on September 30, I can simultaneously support my learning while promoting Indigenous resurgence."

A new connection is making the journey to Royal Roads University easier by bike or on foot.

The new Galloping Goose Bridge is providing a safer and more accessible route for our students and staff who walk or bike to campus. President Philip Steenkamp also uses the new bridge as part of his daily bike commute.

With GoByBike Week underway, it’s a great time to celebrate the connections that make it easier for our community to choose active transportation.

Thank you to the @CityOfColwood and everyone who helped bring this project to life.

This National Week for Truth and Reconciliation, we asked members of our Royal Roads University community, “What action are you taking toward Truth and Reconciliation?”

Here is some of what Alejandro Campos Garcia, Head of Human Rights and Accessibility, said:

“As I reflect on my role in advancing Truth and Reconciliation, I am constantly reminded that learning and unlearning are essential ongoing responsibilities in this endeavour.

"I am committed to supporting the decolonization of post-secondary education by raising awareness of how colonial legacies continue to shape what is recognized as legitimate knowledge, the role of education in community building, the supports we provide to our university members, and the ways post-secondary institutions operate every day.”
